Why plant Emerald Green Arborvitae Hedge in Bulk?
Emerald Green Arborvitae is the go-to plant for creating living green walls in narrow places. At a spacing of 2-3 feet, a row of Emeralds will fill in to make a solid evergreen privacy screen that will block views into your space, muffle noise, and provide a quiet, deep green background for roses or other flowering plants you'd like to grow.
This species, our native Eastern Arborvitae, has the longest lifespan of any North American tree east of the Rockies, and can live 1,700 years. 'Emerald Green' didn't originate here, however. It emerged from a Danish nursery in 1950, which is why you'll sometimes see this tree referred to as 'Smaragd' -- Danish for 'Emerald'. The descendants of the original owner of that nursery, D.T. Poulsen, are still running the business, though their attentions have turned to plant breeding, and they specialize in roses. Some 30 million 'Poulsen' roses are produced annually.
How to use Emerald Green Arborvitae Hedge in Bulk in the landscape?
Unlike many other evergreen trees, such as Spruce or Juniper, Emerald Green Arborvitae isn't prickly, but soft to the touch. It is fragrant, too! Perhaps its aromatic foliage is why Eastern Arborvitae is also known as "White Cedar" even though it isn't a true Cedar tree.

How To Plant Emerald Green Arborvitae Hedge in Bulk
This dapper, formal evergreen specimen tree is an easygoing addition to your landscape. Emerald Green Arborvitae grows in almost any kind of soil, in full sun or light shade. Give it a good drink during dry spells. If it starts to turn brown, it's too late!
In deer country, protect this tree with a repellant, or you may get some unsolicited pruning. The only other pest your Emerald Green trees may encounter is 'bagworms'. Look for little gray cocoons hanging from the branches, pick them off, and crush them under your heel -- problem solved!
How To Water
They require keeping the soil moist (not too wet) after initial planting and be sure to water consistently for the first growing season. Once established, they are more tolerant of drought conditions, reducing your hand-watering responsibilities.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Shearing can be done in late winter or early summer. In climates with heavy snows, they benefit from having multiple leaders trimmed back to maintain one predominate central trunk.
Frequently Asked Questions
This can be normal with any evergreen. Like all trees, evergreens do drop foliage - but not all at once. They also tend to drop their foliage from inner positions - so that browning is normal. It can also occur on outer foliage, but usually to a lesser extent.
Are you keeping up with watering? Browning foliage can be a sign that your evergreen needs more water. Deep, consistent waterings are essential until the tree is established.

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
