FEATURES:

  • Dramatic weeping form with flowing, pendulous branches
  • Silvery blue foliage that adds cool color in every season

  • Cold hardy and wind tolerant once established
  • Best color and form in full sun with well-drained soil
  • Hand Selected, Fresh from the Grower
  • Ships on our trucks because of the size of the tree - does not fit in a box

Bower & Branch Landscape Design Tip

If you want a taller, more upright look, stake the central leader when the tree is young and gently tie it as it grows. This encourages a strong vertical line while the side branches keep their signature drape. Plant in full sun for the best blue color, and prioritize well-drained soil to keep roots happy. Keep a clean mulched ring around the base to protect moisture levels and highlight the form. This is a tree that does not need much pruning, just occasional shaping to guide the silhouette you want. Think of it like styling hair, not giving a haircut.

Why plant Blue Weeping Alaskan Cedar?

Almost as if it's dancing, Blue Weeping Alaskan Cedar has so much graceful movement to it. Dressed in blue-green needles on decadently weeping branches, this pyramidal evergreen stands out in the landscape. Adding unique charm, texture, and character, bringing your garden to life! Plant this mid-sized beauty near boulders, gravel, stonework, or water features for a picturesque vignette you'll love to glimpse outside your window every day.

Most trees native to the Pacific Northwest look out of sorts when made to live in less pampered conditions than they’re used to. Not Weeping Alaskan Cedar. Though at home on the cool, mild, rainy coasts of Alaska, Washington, and Oregon, it performs surprisingly well in the East and Midwest. It never attains the size here that wild ones do on the West Coast, but who has the space for a 100-foot-plus tree anyway? Weeping Alaskan Cedar brings that lush Northwest look to the landscape without getting out of bounds.

How to use Blue Weeping Alaskan Cedar in the landscape?

The Blue Weeping Alaskan Cedar adds a whimsical charm to any garden space or landscape that it's planted in. Weeping branches resemble a waterfall of blue-green evergreen beauty! Plant this evergreen tree to bring a quaint cottage-like feel to your space.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-7

How To Plant Blue Weeping Alaskan Cedar

Weeping Alaskan Cedar likes lots of sunshine, though in areas where summer highs are often in the 90s, it appreciates some afternoon shade. Growth is best when given regular water, but not so much that the ground remains soggy for hours. Its roots are rather shallow, and this tree should be planted in a site that is sheltered from strong winds. Snow, it can handle. Alaskan Cedar was designed to shed precipitation of all sorts. Snow can’t grab onto the waxy sprays of foliage, hanging in long branchlets straight down.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Prune

Prune when needed in late winter. Prune only when necessary to keep the natural beauty and form of your Alaskan Cedar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The foliage holds its cool blue to silvery tones year-round, with the best color typically in full sun and well-drained soil.

It depends on the look you want. Staking the central leader while young can create a taller, narrower form. If left unstaked, it will still grow beautifully, with a more naturally cascading silhouette.

Very little. Most pruning is optional and cosmetic, focused on shaping or clearing a pathway. Light, selective trimming is best, since the natural weeping form is the star.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!

Blue Weeping Alaskan Cedar

This is the second Alaskan Cedar in my yard. The first one is some 20 feet tall (all things in my yard get bigger than what their labels say); so "Lady Treebeard" (the first one is "Treebeard") has a lot of catching up to do. But she is beautifully shaped and I'm looking forward to seeing her catch up.
