Why plant Golden Himalayan Cedar?
The Golden Himalayan Cedar is a majestic and uncommon evergreen tree that will shine like a beacon in your landscape. This medium to large specimen tree bursts forth in spring with a cheerful display of sunny gold new foliage to kick off the season. The needles fade to soft yellow or greenish-gold with the arrival of hot weather, but their fine, feathery texture is a delight throughout the year. This noble tree is worthy of showcasing on the front lawn or it can be used in the backyard, where it will provide not only a nice jolt of color, but also some privacy screening for your patio, pool, or that backyard retreat you go to when you want to get away from it all. There are a lot of trees commonly called “Cedars,” such as Red Cedar, White Cedar, and Western Cedar, that aren’t really Cedars. This one is the real deal. The Himalayan Cedar, or Deodar Cedar, is a true Cedar that’s native from Afghanistan to Nepal in mountainous areas where summers are hot and dry and winters are mild and rainy. It was first brought to Europe in 1822 and was grown in a pinetum in England. (A “pinetum”—your word of the day—is a conifers-only arboretum!) This special golden form was first described in 1866 and was said to exist at that time in both France and the UK.
How to use Golden Himalayan Cedar in the landscape?
The Golden Himalayan Cedar adopts a slim, pyramidal, Christmas-tree shape in youth, but eventually its branches spread out wide at 90 degree angles to the trunk. This naturally tiered shape makes it a good candidate to espalier, or train to grow against a wall. Of course, it’s handsome as a free-standing specimen as well.
How To Plant Golden Himalayan Cedar
All true Cedars relish full sun, and the Golden Himalayan Cedar is no exception. Having adapted to growing on mountainsides, it’s no surprise that Himalayan Cedars demand good drainage, too. They are rather sensitive to strong winter winds and snow and ice loads, so give yours a sheltered spot and knock the snow off the branches should the limbs appear to sag under the weight of a heavy snowfall. This is a moderately fast-growing tree with few pest or disease issues. It requires very little pruning, and as it’s an evergreen tree—no leaf-raking, either!
Frequently Asked Questions
This cedar does not produce showy blooms. Like many conifers, it has subtle pollen structures and may form cones as it matures, but it’s grown for foliage color and form.
Give it full sun for the strongest color, and plant it in well-drained soil. Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season, then water during extended heat or drought so the tree stays stress-free and vibrant.
Pruning is usually minimal. Remove dead or damaged branches in late winter if needed, and avoid heavy shaping. Try not to cut the central leader, since that can change the tree’s natural form.
