Helpful Whispers

When it comes to privacy screens, most tend to lean toward the ever-popular Arborvitae. I mean, if green is your thing, you do you! However, I tend to think outside the box, and solid walls of green year-round aren't quite my thing. If I were to plant a privacy wall, I'd go with the unique and textured Lindsey's Skyward Bald Cypress!

First and foremost, the foliage is super feathery-fine and just begs for a hug! Next, the overall shape of this tree is very uplifting - like an exclamation point for your landscape! You could also prune the lower branches up as the tree matures to expose the dark brown, exfoliating bark.

But one of the most remarkable aspects of the Lindsey Skyward is that while it may look like an evergreen, it's actually a deciduous tree. By fall, the bright, feathery green 'needles' turn a shimmering mixture of golden orange hues that shine against the blue fall sky. The branching structure is so tight and upright that your privacy remains, even during the cold winter months!

Added bonus? Easy fall clean up - if you even have to at all! As the tree is only going to be about 10-12 feet wide at maturity, the 'clean up' needed will occur around the base of the tree. But then again, the small 'needles' are so fine, they may even drift away in the breeze - making your fall clean-up a breeze!

Plant this stunning tree as a privacy screen, a spire on either side of your front door, or even in that pesky location in your yard that holds water after a storm. The Lindsey's Skyward will thrive and shine in any location!

Why plant Lindsey's Skyward™ Bald Cypress?

Lindsey’s Skyward™ Bald Cypress will be a green exclamation point in your landscape, providing a strong vertical element with its svelte, upright habit. This perky, compact version of our native Bald Cypress Tree is just the thing to give your garden a little pizzazz. Its upswept branches and soft, feathery foliage give it a look unlike any other conifer you’ll find. Plant a single specimen as a focal point in a mixed border or plant a pair of trees on either side of a gate, path, or bench to highlight a particular feature in your garden. We are pleased to be able to offer this exciting new tree!

Bald Cypress conjures up images of the Okefenokee Swamp on the Georgia-Florida border, where this majestic tree grows right in the water among the alligators and water moccasins. In wet places it often grows woody “knees,” which protrude from the water. Bald Cypress grows just fine in average garden soil as well and is surprisingly cold-hardy given its southern roots. Lindsey’s Skyward™ originated as a chance seedling at the tree farm of Robert Lindsey of Mustang, Oklahoma, in 1990. The new plant was unique for its extremely upright habit, its fullness from top to bottom, its slow growth rate (it was 23 feet tall after 20 years), and its lack of surface roots in wet soil.

How to use Lindsey's Skyward™ Bald Cypress in the landscape?

Deciduous conifers are funny plants that look like evergreens, but lose their needles for the winter. Your neighbors may be very concerned when your “evergreen” tree goes bare! Before Lindsey’s Skyward™ Bald Cypress disrobes in late fall, its soft, feathery foliage will take on warm coppery orange tones, putting on a lovely show of late-season color.

How To Plant Lindsey's Skyward™ Bald Cypress

Plant Lindsey’s Skyward™ Bald Cypress in a sunny location. This tree isn’t fussy about soil and will happily grow in clay and will love that troublesome part of your yard where water drains poorly. Average soils are fine, too, and this tree will even tolerate some drought once established.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water slowly and thoroughly. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

Due to the tight, compact structure of the Lindsey's Skyward™ Bald Cypress, pruning is not required. However, if an errant branch occurs, it would be best to prune in late winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

My evergreen is showing some browning foliage towards the inside of the tree. Is this normal?

This can be normal with any evergreen. Like all trees, evergreens do drop foliage - but not all at once. They also tend to drop their foliage from inner positions - so that browning is normal. It can also occur on outer foliage, but usually to a lesser extent.

Are you keeping up with watering? Browning foliage can be a sign that your evergreen needs more water. Deep, consistent waterings are essential until the tree is established.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
