Goji Berries, sometimes referred to as Chinese Wolfberries, are native to Asia and come from either the Lycium barbarum or Lycium chinense varieties. An important berry in traditional Chinese medicine, Goji berries have been utilized for health benefits for over 2000 years! Other than the berries, the purple flowers and leaves are edible and can be used in tea or consumed raw like the berries. Today, Goji berries are cultivated all over the world from the United States to Asia, Canada and the UK. China remains to be one of the largest exporters of these small red berries to this day.

How to use Goji Berry in the landscape?

Due to the size of the fruit and the awkward size of the plant, Goji berries are hard to produce in large-scale farms. However, Goji berries are great to fill a section of the landscape that is bare and needs to have a productive purpose. Goji berry plants are super easy to grow and one Goji plant can take off and fill a space in a few growing seasons. The long branches droop and resemble a willow if left untouched, but use a trellis or tomato cage to contain the stems and make picking the bright red berries easier. Plus, after the purple flowers bloom in May and June, the long harvest season begins and can extend to late fall. Berries should be allowed to elongate before being picked, and the longer they are on the branches, the sweeter the fruit will be.

How To Plant Goji Berry

The Goji Berry plant will be one of the easiest plants to grow in your landscape. Once planted in the ground, the plant handles the rest and you can just sit back until the red berries are ripe for picking. There are a few preferences that Goji has to help thrive in the landscape. Ensure that the soil is acidic for the best growth and be sure to water consistently the first growing season until established.

How To Water

Goji plants are more drought-tolerant than other fruiting trees, but only once their roots are established. Water well once it has arrived! Once it has been planted, water thoroughly and consistently within the first few years - keeping the new roots moist.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting.

How To Prune

Pruning should be done sparingly as any pruning can inhibit fruit production since fruit will grow on any part of the branches and not at one designated area. Prune out dead or broken branches before the new growth and leave the healthy stems to grow and produce the next crop.
