Why plant American Beech?

Walking through an American Beech tree forest has a soothing effect on frazzled nerves. Feeling sheltered under its magnificent domed canopy, watching the shadow-play on the smooth gray trunks, and hearing the bustle of squirrels foraging for Beech nuts, you can’t help but feel your worries fade away. You can bring a bit of this magic to your own space by planting this noble, native shade tree on your property. And while you’ll enjoy watching your tree grow and change through the seasons, even more satisfying, perhaps, will be pleasure of knowing the joy you’ll pass along to others. Planting a Beech tree today is a wonderful and generous gift to many generations to come.

American Beech is possibly our country’s most elegant forest tree. In winter, its bleached, tissue-paper leaves flutter against slate-gray trunks, in spring, jade-green leaves emerge, in fall, the foliage turns shades of warm yellow and topaz. Native across a broad expanse of the Eastern U.S. and Canada, American Beech is a climax species, eventually dominating a forest if conditions are right. It can grow to over 100 feet tall in the wild. Its nuts feed deer, bears, porcupines, squirrels, turkeys, blue jays, and at one time, passenger pigeons—now extinct.

How to use American Beech in the landscape?

An American classic! Easily identified by its smooth gray bark (it kinda looks like elephant skin) and bright green leaves. The grandeur of this tree shows in the massive branching structure of mature trees. A legacy tree for sure.

How To Plant American Beech

American Beech is particular in its needs. It prefers the woodsy soils that it calls home, so if you live in an older neighborhood and native beeches grow nearby, this tree may be a good fit. Newer subdivisions where the topsoil has been scraped off spell trouble. American Beech likes a steady supply of moisture, but no standing water, and it won’t tolerate soil being piled on top of its roots, as happens sometimes during construction projects. It is shallow-rooted and needs to “breathe,” just like you and me!

How To Water

When first planted, water your American Beech twice a week. After that, rainfall should be sufficient. Be sure that water does not pool around the base of your tree as it will not like that!

How To Fertilize

Fertilize your new American Beech with the Bower & Branch Elements Starter Plant Food when planting. After that, fertilize in early spring and again in fall to be sure your tree has all it needs for healthy growth!

How To Prune

The best time to prune your American Beech is in winter, when the tree is dormant. Remove any damaged or cross branching you may see to ensure proper growth.

*Big trees and shrubs, Size XL and bigger, will take approximately 21 to 28 days to be delivered, during live shipping periods.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
