Why plant Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea?

Be sure to give this lace cap variety of Hydrangea a wide berth in spring when the cherry red flowers explode against the dark green leaves! The Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea is an awe-inducing hydrangea with hot pink to red florets that surround the petite, star-shaped pinkish-white flowers - as per the lace cap 'style'. These blooms, sitting atop the large and deep green foliage, are non-stop and long-lasting, providing a sweet showing all season long. As the summer nights being to cool, the foliage transitions to a deep burgundy to purple color and the flowers fade to a delicate pale purple - prolonging the beauty and enjoyment of this darling hydrangea!

Bigleaf Hydrangeas have been a popular addition to landscapes since the early 1800s, when Sir Joseph Banks introduced these gorgeous plants to England from Japan. Since then, hundreds of varieties have been created and introduced to the marketplace. The Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea was introduced by McKay Nursery in Waterloo, Wisconsin by Thomas Buechel - the owner of McKay's. With the goal of developing a cold hardy lace cap hydrangea, Thomas got down to work and from there, the Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea was born!

How to use Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea in the landscape?

The Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea deserves a location front and center for all to see and enjoy! Line your walkways with this long-lasting bloomer, use it as a low hedge, or in your pollinator garden - the showy blooms will attract all sorts of birds, bees and butterflies to your landscape!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-8

How To Plant Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea

Big Leaf Hydrangea grow best when they get full sun for part of the day and shade the balance of the day. Up north, where the summers are cooler, they like full sun for up to six hours each day. As you move south, the summer sun is more intense, so less full sun is desired. In Zone 8, consider two hours of full direct sun as ideal. Your Big Leaf Hydrangea will have pink flowers in an alkaline soil and blue flowers in acidic soil.

How To Water

Your Cherry Explosion Bigleaf Hydrangea should be watered regularly and deeply until plant has reaches establishment. Once the plant has matured it will need average water.

How To Fertilize

Feed your Bigleaf Hydrangeas yearly with organic fertilizer, our Elements Starter Plant Food will work best!

How To Prune

Prune your hydrangea right after it flowers to control its size or to tidy things up. Don't prune it hard because those stems will have flower buds for next year! Your Cherry Explosion Hydrangea is a reblooming variety and will follow its initial huge flowering period with more flowers through the rest of the summer and into early Fall.
