Why plant Crimson Queen Laceleaf Japanese Maple?

Crimson Queen Japanese Maple is a living sculpture for your garden. This picturesque dwarf weeping Japanese Maple features red laceleaf foliage and smooth, pewter-gray branches that twist and turn as they tumble to the ground. Every year the display will grow more impressive—wowing you and your family, garnering praise from guests, and adding value to your home. This splurge-worthy Maple tree will be the star in any of the planting beds around your home. Give Crimson Queen Maple the choicest spot you can, because this work of art will be on display for a long, long time!

Japanese Maples have been cultivated by the Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans for several hundred years, and by the rest of the world for over two hundred. That’s a lot of eyes watching for new forms, and as a result, they now come in an astounding variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. Two traits highly valued in any tree—red foliage and a weeping habit—meet in this special tree that was sure to be a winner from the day it debuted at the Connecticut nursery of Peter Cascio, in 1965.

How to use Crimson Queen Laceleaf Japanese Maple in the landscape?

Majestic cascading branches are covered with delicate, burgundy red, thread-like leaves all season long. The exceptional branching makes it an excellent focal point in the winter months as well. This “queeny” will provide loads of personality in any landscape. Simply Awesome!

How To Plant Crimson Queen Laceleaf Japanese Maple

Japanese Maples like to be planted in full sun, but would appreciate some light afternoon shade as well. Full blazing sun along with poor soil conditions can cause leaf scorch. They also would appreciate being planted in areas that get protection from wind; they do not tolerate windswept locations. Japanese Maples must be planted in soils that are well-drained; they will not tolerate wet, poor quality soils. Once you have found the perfect location to plant your Japanese Maple, keep it watered throughout dry spells until it has become established in your garden. Japanese Maples, when maintained properly, do not have any major pest or disease problems. However, they do run the risk of getting Verticillium, which is a root fungus. This occurs when the Japanese Maple is planted in soil that is not well-drained. Proper planting location will also help the burgundy-leafed Japanese Maples keep their deep, rich color. If the tree becomes stressed because of poor soil quality, or too wet/dry soil, the color of the foliage will be altered. So, what’s important? Location, location, location!

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

Prune Japanese Maples in the summer. If pruned in the early spring, they tend to bleed excessively. Pruning can be needed to remove crossing or damaged branches, to open up the tree structure artistically to show off the branching or to help keep your tree fuller. Pruning a little each year and not all at once will help keep your maple healthy.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
