Helpful Whispers
Nowadays, new introductions from nurseries tend to be something intentionally created when working to create something amazing. But every now and then, Mother Nature steps in and says, ‘watch and learn, suckers.’
Enter the Crimson Spire Oak tree! This stunning variety of Oak made its first appearance in Champaign, Illinois, as an oddball seedling in a crop of Columnar English Oaks. The reason this little fella stuck out like a sore thumb? Well, in the sea of boring old yellow-brown fall color, he was a blazing crimson-red! These fiery leaves also showed zero signs of powdery mildew - a common cosmetic issue that is quite prevalent on English Oaks.
But that’s not all! (infomercial much?!) The Crimson Spire Oak is a columnar form - topping out at 40-45 feet tall with a width of 15-20 feet, making this a superb option as a privacy screen! You could also place these spires on either side of your front door or walkway for an impressive and formal welcome! Oh - and they grow faster than other varieties of Oak, as they can put on about 2’ of growth a year!
So, to recap:
- Blessed with stunning fall color
- Fantastic disease resistance
- Tight, columnar shape
- Fast growth rate

Why plant Crimson Spire™ Oak?
Ten-HUT! The Crimson Spire™ Oak is a tall, strong, svelte accent tree that will bring a powerful vertical presence to your garden. Plant a single specimen to lend structure to a large island bed, or plant a pair of trees at the front corners of your house to anchor your foundation plantings and frame your home in style. You can also plant a row of Crimson Spire™ Oaks to serve as an elegant privacy screen. This is a deciduous tree, but it tends to hold onto its dried leaves in the winter, extending its privacy coverage. Whatever you need Crimson Spire™ to do, you can count on it to get the job done right.
Some hanky panky’s been going on! The Crimson Spire™ Oak originated at the nursery of Willet “Bill” Wandell of Champaign, Illinois. Wandell was raising a crop of seedlings from acorns he’d collected from a Columnar English Oak Tree, when he noticed something unusual. One of the little trees got amazing russet-red to crimson-red fall color, which is bizarre for an English Oak. That same plant didn’t have a touch of powdery mildew on it leaves, although the others were afflicted with this common cosmetic disease that regularly attacks English Oaks. Wandell looked around the mother tree and saw a White Oak that must have been the baby daddy to the hybrid offspring. He patented the tree in 1994.
How to use Crimson Spire™ Oak in the landscape?
Would you like to get an Oak Tree, but think they’re too slow-growing? Being a hybrid, Crimson Spire™ exhibits what is known as “hybrid vigor”—it’s actually a moderately fast-growing tree! With proper feeding and irrigation, it may reach 45 feet in 20 years. Making a stately privacy wall, the Crimson Spire™ Oak will create wonderful screen or 'spires' on either side of your front door!
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zone: 5-8
How To Plant Crimson Spire™ Oak
Plant Crimson Spire™ Oak in a site that receives all-day sun. The soil should be well drained and not remain soggy after a rain but generally, the Crimson Spire™ is quite tolerant of a wide range of conditions!
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Crimson Spire™ has a naturally dense branching habit from head to toe, but if you do need to prune, make sure that you do it in winter.

Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
