Why plant Yellow Buckeye?

We’re excited to be able to offer this special native beauty. You won’t find this one at the box stores! Each year, you’ll look forward to watching its almost tropical-looking leaves burst forth from fat buds. The pale yellow flowers, doted on by hummingbirds, follow. Yellow Buckeye is valued for its lovely fall color as well. Each tree is different, but most take on pleasing golden-orange tones when nights begin to turn frosty. Tree expert Michael Dirr puts it best when he writes in his famous Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: “I could look at this tree forever.”

Yellow Buckeye gets its name from its yellow flowers and its large, smooth seeds, which are thought to resemble a deer’s eye. Where this tree is found in the wild—from Pennsylvania to Alabama, and west to Illinois—Native Americans once included its nutritious seeds as part of their diet. The seeds are quite poisonous off the tree, so the people had to roast them and carefully leach the toxins out before eating them. More recently, the seeds have inspired a “Buckeye” lookalike candy recipe made from peanut butter and chocolate. We prefer the candy version!

How to use Yellow Buckeye in the landscape?

Yellow Buckeye is a glorious but hard-to-locate American tree for large suburban lots, grand estates, and spacious country properties. Assuming in time a bold, upright-rounded shape, it possesses an imposing presence in the landscape.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-8

How To Plant Yellow Buckeye

Give Yellow Buckeye ample room to grow, both upwards and outwards, in full sun to part shade. Native to rich, moist, loamy soil, it also appreciates those conditions in the landscape. This tree isn’t the best choice for clay soil or hot, dry sites, though it is more tolerant of adverse conditions than other Buckeyes. It’s relatively resistant to the leaf diseases that plague many Buckeyes and Horsechestnuts, so it will still be looking sharp in the fall, while others may be defoliated. Mulch well with wood chips, shredded bark, or pine straw to conserve moisture, and irrigate regularly to keep your tree looking thrifty.

How To Water

Yellow Buckeye trees prefer consistently moist soil, so be sure to water your new tree on a regular basis. For the first growing year, water it slowly, deeply, and thoroughly every two to three days.

How To Fertilize

When planting, we recommend that you apply the Bower & Branch Elements Plant Food to be sure your tree has all it needs to begin to establish itself. Reapply each spring for the next three years, at least.

How To Prune

The best time to prune your Yellow Buckeye is in late winter to early Spring. Simply remove any damaged or dead branches.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
