Why plant Evergold Variegated Sedge?

Edge your beds in style with Evergold Weeping Sedge! This classy Fringe forms a tidy, low-growing tuft of fine-textured foliage that’s perfect for the front of the border. Its dazzling variegation makes it especially welcome in shady landscapes. Each green blade displays a central stripe of creamy yellow that lights up dark spaces. In mild-winter climates, Evergold Sedge looks neat and polished all year long and requires hardly any maintenance to keep it that way. Try it with conifers, broad-leaved evergreens, bold-foliaged Hostas, or purple, blue, orange, or white flowers. It mixes beautifully with all of these and more.

Sedges grow all over the world; nearly 1,000 different species can be found, each offering unique growth habits, colors, and other qualities. Many, if not most, are native to moist regions, but the Weeping Sedge is found in dry, rocky hills and forests on Japan’s main island, and it possesses considerable drought tolerance. The species was first described in 1914 and is typically solid green. No one knows exactly when this brilliant variegated form arose, but it has been in the U.S. since at least the 1980s. Evergold has gone by many aliases, including ‘Aureo-variegata’, ‘Everbrite’, ‘Old Gold’, and ‘Variegata’.

How to use Evergold Variegated Sedge in the landscape?

Evergold Weeping Sedge is sensational in a container. Where winters aren’t too brutal, it can bring brightness and cheer to a container planting even in the depths of winter. Plant it with other hardy evergreens in a pretty pot and keep it by your door to welcome guests and to give yourself a winter pick-me-up every time you come or go.

How To Plant Evergold Variegated Sedge

Native to Japan, Evergold Weeping Sedge prefers a climate that is neither extremely hot nor extremely cold, but it is otherwise unfussy and easy to grow. Plant it in part shade for best results. You will need to water regularly during the first summer, but after the plant is established, it will be fairly drought tolerant. In cool-summer climates, Evergold Sedge may be grown in full sun, but it will require more frequent watering there.

How To Water

Provide your Evergold Variegated Sedge with a regular watering schedule for the best results. Your sedge should be watered more while in the sun, but less when in shadier areas.

How To Fertilize

Fertilize your Variegated Sedge with a slow release, balanced fertilizer in spring for promising growth. Luckily, we have our own fertilizer! Use our Elements Starter Plant Food to give your plants that extra boost they'll need.

How To Prune

To spruce up appearance, cut back any dead and brown blades. Pruning this fella is not a difficult task, they can usually keep up with themselves!
