Why plant Bloodgood Japanese Maple?
Bloodgood Japanese Maple loves to be the center of attention all year long. In spring, its foliage emerges a screaming ruby-red color. In fall, when the leaves drop, the tree’s picturesque, open framework is unveiled—its branches so smooth and muscly, you’ll want to touch them. This is one of the best small ornamental trees you can add to your front yard landscaping, as each tree is a work of art that adds value to your home. Contrary to popular belief, some Japanese Maples—like this one—are moderate- to fast-growing trees, at least in youth. Your Bloodgood Maple will be hogging the spotlight before you know it!
Japanese Maples, native to not only Japan, but also China and Korea, were revered in the East centuries before any Westerner had laid eyes on them. In Japan, they are called momiji, and symbolize serenity. The practice of momiji-gari, or the viewing of autumn leaves, is a cherished tradition there. The selection Bloodgood may have originated here in America in the 1790s at Bloodgood Nursery in what is now Queens, New York. Though today there are hundreds of different Japanese Maples to choose from, this selection remains the most popular.
How to use Bloodgood Japanese Maple in the landscape?
This is the traditional Japanese Maple found in every neighborhood. But some of those Maples don't keep their vibrant burgundy red foliage like this selection does all season long. The perfect choice for a small garden or as a focal point in a larger landscape.

How To Plant Bloodgood Japanese Maple
Japanese Maples like to be planted in full sun, but would appreciate some light afternoon shade as well. Full blazing sun along with poor soil conditions can cause leaf scorch. They also would appreciate being planted in areas that get protection from wind; they do not tolerate windswept locations. Japanese Maples must be planted in soils that are well-drained; they will not tolerate wet, poor quality soils. Japanese Maples, when maintained properly, do not have any major pest or disease problems. However, they do run the risk of getting Verticillium, which is a root fungus. This occurs when the Japanese Maple is planted in soil that is not well-drained. Proper planting location will also help the burgundy-leafed Japanese Maples keep their deep, rich color. If the tree becomes stressed because of poor soil quality, or too wet/dry soil, the color of the foliage will be altered. So, what’s important? Location, location, location!
How To Water
Once you have found the perfect location to plant your Japanese Maple, it will appreciate regular water during the first few years in the ground. Be sure to keep it watered throughout dry spells until it has become established in your garden.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Prune Japanese Maples in the summer. If pruned in the early spring, they tend to bleed excessively. Pruning can be needed to limb up your tree, to remove crossing or damaged branches, to open up the tree structure artistically to show off the branching or to help keep your tree fuller. Pruning a little each year and not all at once will help keep your maple healthy.

Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
