Why plant Deutschland Astilbe?
Create a cool and inviting shady retreat! Make Deutschland Astilbe part of a serene outdoor space where you can relax after a busy day. Sit back in a comfy lounge chair, surrounded by Spirits that give a lush effect. Plants like Ferns, Hostas, Solomon’s Seal, and Japanese Forest Grass make a soothing scene, and Deutschland Astilbe adds an elegant touch of its own. Its fine, feathery, snow-white blooms put on a marvelous show in late spring, and the glossy green leaves present a pleasing appearance all season. We think it’s simply divine!
If you speak German, you know that “Deutschland” means “Germany.” Although Astilbes originated in China, Japan, and Korea, Deutschland Astilbe’s story, not surprisingly, is centered in Germany. That’s where the great plant breeder, Geroge Arends, lived. Arends founded his nursery in 1888. A devoted plantsman, he traded seeds and cuttings with friends around the world and hybridized his own plants, always seeking improvements or something new. He had a special fondness for Astilbes. In his lifetime, he introduced 74 new Astilbes to the world (including this one in 1920) and 350 plants in all. Bombings during both World Wars destroyed much of his nursery, but each time he picked up the pieces and went back to work.
How to use Deutschland Astilbe in the landscape?
Astilbes bloom during that magical time between spring and summer, when the weather is warm but not oppressively hot—the best time to be outside! Deutschland is one of the earliest-blooming Astilbes; it kicks off Astilbe season with style and grace.

How To Plant Deutschland Astilbe
Deutschland Astilbe is best in afternoon shade. It will also grow in deep shade. Astilbes need regular irrigation to maintain bright, healthy foliage. Some people like the look of the spent seedheads and leave them standing; others cut them down as soon as the flowers have finished. Shear back all old stems and leaves in early spring. Mulch and fertilize annually—Astilbes are heavy feeders. Digging and dividing plants every three years will keep them growing vigorously (and will give you more plants!).
How To Water
Water as soon as they arrive! Astilbe plants need to be watered regularly to maintain evenly moist soil for proper establishment in the landscape.
