Why plant Flamenco Red Hot Poker?

As spirited and bold as the famous Spanish dance, Flamenco Red Hot Poker will energize your landscape. From thick mounds of strappy green foliage rise torches of smoldering color. Orange, red, and yellow blossoms blaze away in the summer sun. Flamenco Red Hot Poker will make a strong statement in your landscape. Put it where you spend the most time outdoors—near the deck, patio, or pool—or put it near your living room or kitchen window, so you can enjoy viewing it from the comfort of your air-conditioning. ¡Olé!

It’s no surprise that Red Hot Pokers give an exotic look to the landscape, much different from anything in our native flora. They come from Africa. The hardier types usually hail from regions far from the equator, such as South Africa. Flamenco is a seed-grown strain of Red Hot Poker that was developed in the 1990s by the international seed company Benary. In 1999, the Flamenco Mix won an All-American Selections award. This coveted award is given to the best new plants which are grown from seed.

How to use Flamenco Red Hot Poker in the landscape?

In their native Africa, Red Hot Pokers are pollinated by sunbirds. These nectar-loving birds have long, thin bills for delving into tubular flowers. In our country, where sunbirds don’t exist, hummingbirds do that job. Plant Flamenco Red Hot Poker near a sitting area or window, where you can watch the hummers work their magic. They’re also a nice size to use as cut flowers. Bring the beauty indoors!

How To Plant Flamenco Red Hot Poker

Flamenco Red Hot Poker enjoys a sunny site that stays somewhat moist but never soggy. Make sure the soil drains freely and water regularly in the summer. Constantly wet soil, especially in the wintertime will spell trouble.

How To Water

Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season. Once established, it is drought tolerant but in extreme heat, be sure to supplement.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

To encourage reblooming, prune the faded flowers. In fall, let the old foliage remain throughout the cold months, resisting the urge to clean it up before warm weather returns in the spring. When you do cut it back, leave a few inches standing—don’t shear it clear back to the ground. Flamenco may be divided in spring or fall if clumps grow too big, but it’s perfectly fine to just leave it in place for years.
