Why plant Early Sunrise Tickseed?

From sunrise to sunset, chipper little Early Sunrise Tickseed spreads joy and happiness in the summer garden. Semi-double golden flowers cover neat mounds of green foliage for weeks. If you’re diligent about snipping out the spent flowers, you may have continuous bloom from late May or June until fall. Early Sunrise tends to be a short-lived Spirit, but new seedlings often appear if you allow some flowers to go to seed. Its ephemeral nature makes it perfect for meadow plantings. Early Sunrise is also wonderful as a temporary space filler—use it around slow-growing Accents to provide color while the permanent plants fill out.

Large-flowered Tickseed turns its glowing golden faces to the sun across much of the southern half of the U.S. This cheery wildflower is native from New Mexico to Florida, ranging north to Missouri. Over the years, it has crept even further north by escaping from gardens. Early Sunrise is a special selection of Large-Flowered Tickseed developed in the 1980s. It features extra petals and a slightly more compact habit than the typical species. In 1989, Early Sunrise won an All-America Selections Gold Medal for its superior garden performance. The award is given each year to the best new plants that can be grown from seed.

How to use Early Sunrise Tickseed in the landscape?

Spice up container planting with Early Sunrise Tickseed! Pop this perky Spirit into a pretty pot to create a welcoming splash of color by your door. It’s great in window boxes, too.

How To Plant Early Sunrise Tickseed

Give Early Sunrise Tickseed a bright, open spot in the landscape where it can bask in the sun all day. Be careful not to overwater it or give it too much fertilizer. This is a water-wise Spirit that’s naturally adapted to dry, lean soils.

How To Water

When watering your Tickseed, you'll want to water deeply every week or when the soil becomes dry. Once plants have become established, they will be able to tolerate drought conditions. Too much water can cause your plant to become floppy!

How To Fertilize

Tickseed flowers don't need fertilization for successful blooms. If you want to give them a springtime boost, we recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food.

How To Prune

Deadheading (removing spent flowers) will greatly lengthen Early Sunrise Tickseed’s bloom period. Be sure to let a few flowers go to seed if you’d like new plants to appear. Large-Flowered Tickseed is generally a short-lived Spirit, so seedlings help to keep a planting going. You can also dig and divide plants in spring to help keep them growing vigorously. Before your plant starts to bud out in the spring, you'll want to remove older stems and foliage.
