Why plant Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon?

Small yet vibrantly beautiful is the Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon. Normally showing off with hues of coral to red flowers, this particular cultivar produces yellow blooms from late spring into summer. While the Penstemon is native to the Americas this version was discovered in a garden in England around 1980. Mersea Yellow grows 10-12” tall and spans a width of about 10-15” making this perennial a perfect fit for smaller spaces. The foliage of the Penstemon is unique, as the name suggests its leaves tend to look like that of pine needles adding an ornate feature to pineless gardens. Calling this plant a perennial is not completely accurate, these plants will remain evergreen except in the coldest portions of its hardiness zone. Enjoy watching butterflies and hummingbirds make quick work of these little guys when planted in the ground or utilized in containers.

How to use Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon in the landscape?

The Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon is easily a must have for any property. These not only offer drought tolerance once established but tend to be evergreen up until their coldest survivable climates where they will then take on perennial qualities. The Penstemon normally appears with coral or red blooms while this particular cultivar produces lemony yellow hues. Utilize this compact guy in rock gardens, in containers to display wherever you please, butterfly gardens, or a native garden. The choice is yours and we would love to see what you decide.

How To Plant Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon

If you are considering adding a Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon to your garden there are a few requirements you should know. These perennials enjoy locations that provide full sun while areas where some shade occurs won't be the end of the world. Your plant may lack the same qualities as one in full sun. The Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon offers adaptability when considering the soil types they tend to thrive in. Capable of growing in moist or dry conditions permitting the soil offers decent drainage. If your property does not offer good drainage simply amend the soil to fit your needs.

How To Water

After planting your Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon its most likely going to be thirsty. Watering should take place no less than twice a week until this perennial is established. Once established the amount of watering may be reduced to once a week or when needed. We recommend keeping an eye on local weather and watering during periods of inclement weather such as high heat and drought.

How To Fertilize

Fertilizer is food for plants, just like you and I, they appreciate a good meal once in a while. This process should start when planting your Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon. Simply incorporate fertilizer to the planting site to initiate the first feeding. If you are planting in the spring then the next feeding should take place in the fall. If planting in the fall then you guessed it spring should be the next application. These steps will provide an excellent source of nutrients and provide a long, happy, healthy life for your plant.

How To Prune

After allowing some time to settle in after planting your Mersea Yellow Pine-Leaved Penstemon it will soon be time for maintenance. The processes used to maintain your Beardtongue are thinning and pinching. During the growing season your Penstemon will produce blooms that you will deadhead before they reach maturity, this prevents the production of seeds which allow this plant to spread. Thinning should take place to also prevent the spread of this perennial while providing air flow which is necessary for the health of your plant. The process of thinning would best take place in fall before dormancy sets in.
