Why plant Moonshine Yarrow?

Non-alcoholic, but sure to make you swoon! Moonshine Yarrow is a sensational Spirit that will liven up your landscape from spring through fall. Silvery, feathery foliage appears early in the year, followed by flowers in mid to late spring. The blooms do indeed make you think of moonlight shining down on Earth. They are wonderful in the mixed border, as the cool, clear yellow color goes with just about everything. Plant Moonshine Yarrow in your entryway garden, near your pool or patio, or in any of the landscape beds around your home for lots of long-lasting, cheerful color!

Yarrow, a European plant, has been valued in Western cultures since ancient times. It has long been believed to have medicinal powers. Its botanical name, Achillea, is a nod to Achilles, the hero of Greek myth, who was said to have healed his soldiers’ wounds with it. In the Middle Ages, Yarrow was used to flavor beer and wine. The same pungent chemicals that flavor alcohol make Yarrow unappealing to deer and other browsing pests. Moonshine Yarrow was introduced in the 1950s by legendary English plantsman Alan Bloom. While newer selections come and go, it remains one of the best Yarrows you can buy.

How to use Moonshine Yarrow in the landscape?

Moonshine Yarrow holds its flower clusters aloft on strong stems that don’t flop. These sturdy stems help to make it a first-rate plant for garden performance as well as for cut flowers. Cutting the flowers (and deadheading spent blooms) will encourage new buds to form, ensuring an extended display.

How To Plant Moonshine Yarrow

Plant Moonshine Yarrow in a sunny, open site. Go easy on the water and fertilizer—this Spirit doesn’t like to be spoiled. It will need regular water during the establishment period, but then will perform better if kept on the dry side. Rich soil and wet conditions will lead to floppy growth. Every few years, you may need to dig up and divide Moonshine to keep it growing vigorously. Simply discard old, weak sections and replant the young, strong-growing sections.

How To Water

The Moonshine Yarrow will need about one inch of water per week. Once this plant has established, it is considered drought-tolerant.

How To Fertilize

This Yarrow is especially one aggressive grower, so you will want to avoid fertilizing.

How To Prune

Pruning this plant is easy! Just prune back at least one third after the first set of flowers fade. Cut back old stems in late fall or whenever they begin to look unattractive to make way for early spring growth.
