Why plant Purple Lovegrass?

Purple Lovegrass is the easy to care for plant your garden needs to add that pop of color! Each fine blade is topped with purplish-pink colors that appear nearing the end of summer. Lovegrass is a small, well-behaved ornamental perennial that are native to central and eastern North America. You can see these colorful grasses in sandy fields, along roadsides, and in woodlands. The airy pink seed heads float gracefully above the dense clumping foliage and dances in the wind. Purple Lovegrass will attract lovely songbirds to your garden with its messy and loose appearance - your garden will feel whimsical and ethereal. In the late summer to fall, the foliage appears of reddish-purple clouds which fades into a soft brown color. Lovegrasses are amazing at holding their color, so your garden will be elevated with its long-lasting bright purples! To create a soft romantic vibe in your garden, Purple Lovegrasses are perfect for you.

How to use Purple Lovegrass in the landscape?

Purple Lovegrass adds a beautiful pop of color in dry sandy and gravelly soils. Perfect late season landscape. Plant in open areas in small groups or mass together with other decorating grasses. Lovegrass compliments well with garden borders, meadow edges, or native plant gardens. Lovegrass also works well as a lawn alternative, as long as they are exposed to light foot traffic. These decorative grasses look stunning rock gardens and gives a new soft texture. Bring a whimsical vibe to cottage gardens and decorate city gardens with Lovegrasses.

How To Plant Purple Lovegrass

Purple Lovegrass prefer to be planted in well drained, dry soil where they can bask in the sun all day. They are very tolerant of hot and dry conditions, then goes dormant in the winter. Lovegrass actively grows during the summer in warm soil conditions. They tolerate infertile, poor soil and are greatly resistant to droughts. Lovegrass spread themselves by self-seeding and steams rooting along the ground at the nodes.

How To Water

Since Purple Lovegrass is a relatively dry plant, they require low to medium watering. During the spring and summer, you can lightly water them but make sure the soil doesn't hold moisture.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

Cut back old steams to the ground in early spring before growth resumes to make way for new healthy growth.
