You could walk into just about any nursery in the country and say “Red Sunset”—or even “Sunset”—and the folks there would know what you mean, without you having to add, “Maple.” Red Sunset® has been the go-to shade tree for landscapers and homeowners since the 1970s. It was developed in the 1940s and introduced by J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Boring, Oregon in 1966. Our Tree-Form, or “Single-Stem,” as they’re called in the trade, “Sunsets” have the classic shade-tree shape, with a clean, straight trunk and a rounded head.

In spring, new foliage is tinged with red eventually turning green with silver undersides. How To Plant Red Sunset® Red Maple
Red Maples are one of those trees that you plant and don’t worry about afterwards. In other words – it’s easy to grow! These fast-growing Maples like soaking up sunshine so be sure to plant it in sunny location. Red Maples also do fairly well in most soil conditions as long as the soil has good drainage. Once established, your tree will be more tolerant of wet soil conditions. Red Maples don’t have any major pest or disease problems, which is wonderful. One slight inconvenience you might encounter is their surface roots. These surface roots make it difficult for anything to grow underneath them – grass or plants (a great spot for a sitting area if you ask me). If you can overcome this minor detail, you got yourself a beautiful shade tree with gorgeous red fall color!
How To Water
Red Maples will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
Red Maples in general don’t need a lot of attention when it comes to pruning as it is in their nature to grow in the pyramidal shape.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!

Hey Everyone,
I bought a clump of three of these maples about four years ago and they are thriving. This one was delivered on time and customer service was terrific. I called customer service because the tree seems to be struggling a bit. I just wanted you to be aware. The leaves have holes in them and it just looks droopy overall. It may be shock or the fact that it spent a bit of time on its side because it kept tipping over when it was in the container. Any thoughts or advice would be welcome. I ordered a Red Sunset Red Maple from here a few months back. I had it planted and I am just so in love with this tree, the fall color was gorgeous and can't wait for more fall seasons to come. I will be ordering more from Bower and Branch hopefully this spring!!!
