Why plant Asian Moon Butterfly Bush?

Exceptional beauty, stunning fragrance, and non-invasive - the Asian Moon Butterfly Bush is a fantastic addition to your landscape! In spring, dark green foliage emerges with a silvery underside to it. From there, it produces tall panicles of light purple blooms, decorated with a bright orange in the center. These blooms are stunning in their own right, offering a honey like fragrance that invites butterflies as well as other pollinators and even hummingbirds to galavant across your landscape!

The Asian Moon Butterfly Bush is a newer hybrid, created by Dr. Jon Linstrom of the University of Arkansas. His goal was to create a cultivar to combat the invasiveness of the original species. This was accomplished when the Asian Moon Butterfly Bush proved to be sterile - it does not produce seeds and blooms from June through late fall.

How to use Asian Moon Butterfly Bush in the landscape?

The Asian Moon Butterfly Bush offers a few outstanding and unique qualities, earning its place in your garden. First, let's touch on its invasiveness - or rather, its NONinvasiveness! The Asian Moon Butterfly Bush is sterile, so in other words, this shrub does not produce seeds that would cause it to spread. With this genetic abnormality, we are able to enjoy lavish blooms well into fall without disrupting the natural environment around us. These shrubs offer some serious adaptability to soil, thriving in almost all types as long as it drains well. Utilize this shrub in a multitude of garden designs such as cottage, rose, or obviously butterfly for stunning visuals. Plant this shrub as an accent around your home or grow a lovely border of fragrant lasting blooms.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 5-9

How To Plant Asian Moon Butterfly Bush

Thriving best in locations that offer full sun, the Asian Moon Butterfly Bush also offers some spectacular soil adaptability. No need to worry about how acidic or alkaline your soil is, or the composition of the soil itself. Heavy clay may be the only soil type that would cause some form of an issue, however, make sure you choose a site that offers decent drainage and you should be fine. Maintain a watering schedule until established, feed when necessary, and enjoy the beautiful blooms and the frequent flyers year in and year out!

How To Water

When freshly planted, be sure to water your Asian Moon Butterfly Bush deeply and well. You'll want to water once or twice a week, consistently, for the first growing season. After that, you can cut back to watering in periods of drought or high heat.

How To Fertilize

Fertilize your Asian Moon Butterfly Bush when first planted - we recommend the Bower & Branch Elements Starter Plant Food to be sure your Butterfly Bush has all it needs for a healthy growing season. Be sure to feed each spring, before your shrub breaks dormancy, to continue providing all your shrub needs!

How To Prune

Due to the speedy growth habit and height of the blooming stalks on the Asian Moon Butterfly Bush, you're going to have to give it a trim. In early spring, before the push of new growth, we recommend pruning for shape. Then again in midsummer, you may prune your Asian Moon Butterfly Bush to about 3’ from the ground, giving the incentive to grow more of these beautiful aromatic blooms!
