Why plant Blue Cascade® Distylium?

Identifiable by it's unique cascading foliage, the Blue Cascade Distylium has much to offer in a small package. Ideal for use as a small hedge or mass plantings, Blue Cascade proves that it is up for the task of adding long-standing structure by being heat tolerant, drought tolerant, and diseases and pests are also not a huge issue with this shrub. Blue Cascade also offers plenty of color in the form of petite red blooms in late winter and new foliage that starts out as a purple-bronze that then turns to a blue-green.

Originating from China, Distylium makes up a small grouping of plants that are actually related to witch-hazel. There were three distyliums brought over from China that proved to be popular: Distylium myricoides, Distylium racemosum, and a hybrid between the two. It was the hybrid that attracted Dr. Michael Dirr at the University of Georgia to the DNA and reseeding of this hybrid. Many distylium cultivars are very tolerant of heat, drought, pests and diseases making these great additions to any landscape.

How to use Blue Cascade® Distylium in the landscape?

Blue Cascade is a cascading broadleaf evergreen for your yard that doesn't burn in the winter and then look less than desireable during the rest of the year, here is your answer. Tough and easy to grow, Blue Cascade offers lots of adaptability to the challenges nature provides. New growth starts as purple-bronze that changes to wonderful blue-green evergreen foliage and eventually adds small red flowers in late winter, your landscape will be bursting with color season after season.

How To Plant Blue Cascade® Distylium

Blue Cascade is an exceptionally easy accent to grow with very few requirements. Plant Blue Cascade in average to wet soils that see full sun to partial shade. One of the best qualities of this accent is that deer leave it alone so no special precautions are needed to protect this plant. Only prune if you desire a clean-cut look, otherwise leave Blue Cascade to grow in naturally and fill it empty spaces.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
