How To Plant Contorted Hinoki Cypress

Hinoki Cypress prefer to grow in full-sun with moist and well drained soils. They aren't too picky about soil types as long as they can breathe. Maintenance is minimal.

How To Water

Our Cypresses need weekly regular watering, or more in extreme heat.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

Pruning is not required, but it is recommended to remove the dead and diseased branches.

Frequently Asked Questions

My evergreen is showing some browning foliage towards the inside of the tree. Is this normal?

This can be normal with any evergreen. Like all trees, evergreens do drop foliage - but not all at once. They also tend to drop their foliage from inner positions - so that browning is normal. It can also occur on outer foliage, but usually to a lesser extent.

Are you keeping up with watering? Browning foliage can be a sign that your evergreen needs more water. Deep, consistent waterings are essential until the tree is established.
