Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 3-7

How To Plant Dwarf Mugo Pine

Dwarf Mugo Pines grow well in any soil type except clay. These plants prefer cooler conditions and has brilliant tolerance of urban environments.

How To Water

Water a young Dwarf Mugo Pine thoroughly during the summer so the soil remains moist. Once established, these plants are moderately drought tolerant and will only need to be watered during long periods of time without water. Let the soil dry out before watering again.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

When considering cleaning up your Mugo Pine it is more customary to shear rather than prune. With the dwarf characteristics this pine offers it is not required but is accepted if you so desire. Shearing deals with the appearance of trees or shrubs where pruning is done for health. We recommend doing so in spring and only trimming off what new growth is there. Pruning out of season or into older growth will prevent new growth from forming.
