Why plant Oregon Grape?

Unlike true grapes, the Oregon Grape is actually considered an evergreen shrub. Surprisingly, Mahonia aquifolium, or the Oregon Grape as its commonly named, has a plethora of name variations - some of them are Oregon Hollygrape, Tall Oregon Grape and the Holly Leaved Barberry. During the summer months, this plant offers a deep green color that transitions to a lovely maroon in winter. However, the effects of cold, wind, or even age can cause change in the color of the Oregon Grapes foliage. When studying the Oregon Grape, we can see that the leaves are configured in a pennate shape, or what is considered "feathered", and have a wonderful glossy appeal. Providing fantastic seasonal viewing in late winter, we notice that the Oregon Grape blooms small clusters of bright yellow flowers preparing us for June when we're blessed with bluish raisin-sized berries. In the wild, the Oregon Grape serves as cover for small animals, as well as food and shelter for birds.

The Oregon Grape was designated the state flower by the Oregon legislature in 1899.

How To Plant Oregon Grape

Cultivating your own Oregon Grape is very possible. Here are some simple tips from our home to yours! Plant your grape in a location that grants partial sun for best results, however this plant is capable of growing with more or less sun, depending on the location. This plant tolerates a variety of soil types but thrives best in well draining slightly acidic soils.

How To Water

The Oregon Grape does enjoy a wet environment. If you live in an area with a more dry soil type, we recommend a thorough watering weekly to prevent any damage to your plant. When planting with more moist soil types, watering can be limited to when weather requires it - such as intense sun or drought like conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

Pruning is not required, although it may be done in spring when this plant is done blooming. The Oregon grape can actually be cut back down to the ground giving it a fresh start and a new look.
