Why plant Red Prince Weigela?

With the way the hummingbirds dive-bomb this plant, you could lose an eye if you get too close! Even from a safe distance, you'll delight in Red Prince’s display of intense, ruby-red spring blossoms, and as a bonus, you'll often be treated to a curtain call of red flowers in late summer. Plant this gem within the mixed borders along your foundation, near your pool, along your property line, or anywhere you need a pop—or two! —of color!

Weigela, a plant of China and Korea, was brought to Western gardens by Scottish plant explorer Robert Fortune in 1845. Fortune often masqueraded as a Chinese man to access verboten plants—like tea, which he smuggled into India to satisfy England’s legendary fascination with the stuff. Weigela was named after a German professor of botany and pharmacology, Christian Weigel. ‘Red Prince’ was bred in 1984 by Iowa State professor Jack Weigle. We can only imagine that Weigle felt a special calling to this plant because of his last name!

How to use Red Prince Weigela in the landscape?

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-8

How To Plant Red Prince Weigela

Red Prince Weigela grows best in full sun but it can handle a bit of shade - if in a location with too much shade, it will affect flowering. They are happiest in almost all soils, as long as they're well draining.

How To Water

In the first growing season, it's best to water when the top two inches of soil are dry. As the plant becomes established, watering needs lessen.

How To Fertilize

Feed your Red Prince Weigela in early spring, before it fully breaks dormancy. We recommend that you apply the Bower & Branch Elements Starter Plant Food to give it all the nutrients it will need for the year!

How To Prune

Pruning the Red Prince Weigela is about timing - if pruning occurs in late fall or early spring, you'll remove the flower buds so you won't be able to enjoy the show. It is best to prune for shape and size control after flowering.
