Why plant Ruby Falls Weeping Redbud?
When Ruby Falls Redbud first went up for sale in 2010, it rocketed to the top of many people's wish lists for the garden. This charismatic little tree has it all! What other ornamental tree can boast delicate lilac-pink flowers in spring, bold plum-purple foliage, and a graceful weeping habit? What's more, this choice native flowering tree's small size means it has a place in any garden, large or small. You'll probably want to give Ruby Falls a premium, high-traffic spot in your landscape, such as near your front door, patio, or deck, because this dazzling specimen tree deserves to be shown off. Get Ruby Falls Redbud off your wish list and in the ground today!
This tree was no chance discovery, but rather the result of a carefully orchestrated nine-year program. NCSU's Dennis Werner got the ball rolling in 2001 by placing a red-leaved Redbud (Forest Pansy) in a cage with a weeping Redbud (Lavender Twist®) and a nest of bumblebees. Twenty-three seeds from that pairing germinated. Then, Werner waited four years for those trees to reach fruiting age. When they did (having cross-pollinated each other), they produced the next generation of seeds. From the thousands that germinated, the best one was chosen -- Ruby Falls!
How to use Ruby Falls Weeping Redbud in the landscape?
No more excuses! This beauteous tree deserves to be in any garden, big or small...just because. A weeping Redbud with rosy-purple flowers appearing before the red-purple leaves. Heart shaped leaves emerge red-purple in spring gradually maturing to deep purple then acquiring a hint of green as the season wears on. Ideal as a specimen planting in a high traffic location, I know I want one... well, just because. What about you?

How To Plant Ruby Falls Weeping Redbud
Ruby Falls isn't as cold-hardy as regular Redbuds; areas with winters that drop to -5°F may be its northernmost limit. A site in full sun will coax the richest coloring out of its leaves and make for the densest display of both foliage and flowers. As for shaping, if you want the tree to grow taller before it weeps, you may have to help it along by staking the leader. This only works on the fresh, new growth, however, as the wood becomes brittle once it "hardens off".
How To Water
Irrigate with the Bower & Branch Elements Watering System to deliver a steady supply of moisture to the roots during the critical first couple of years of establishment. Ruby Falls will be somewhat drought tolerant after that, but its foliage will look its best with regular water.
How To Fertilize
Redbuds like fertilizer! During fall, feed your Redbud Bower & Branch Elements Fertilizer once a year for about the first 3 or 4 years - this will give your tree all the nutrients it needs.
How To Prune
Redbuds occasionally sprout "suckers" around the base of the tree, as they appear be sure to prune them off. But when it comes to pruning the branches of your Redbud -- don't be afraid! They are so easy to prune -- prune to whatever shape you like. If you don't want to touch it -- that's fine. If you want to cut everything off except two branches that look like rabbit ears, that's fine too (although you might get some weird looks from the neighbors -- and your family).

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
