Why plant The Rising Sun™ Redbud?
You won't have to be an early bird to enjoy these sunrise colors! Few trees have caused such a commotion in recent years as The Rising Sun™ Redbud, and when you see it, you'll know why! We're excited to offer this small but bold ornamental tree that will bring a tropical feel to your patio, pool, or entryway landscaping. You'll hardly believe this is our humble native Redbud tree seen all over the Eastern U.S. when its large heart-shaped leaves are decked out not in green but in tropical fruit colors of mango, tangerine, lemon, and lime. In spring, you'll enjoy the familiar lilac-pink flowers, too!
Growing trees from seed is always a fun gamble. The genetic variability within some species is profound, and you never know what might appear. Nurseryman Ray Jackson of Belvidere, Tennessee rolled the dice in 2004 when he sowed an innocent-looking batch of Redbud seeds. When one plant emerged with screaming yellow-orange leaves, he knew he’d hit the jackpot. The new tree made a lot of seasoned gardeners weak in the knees! The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society acknowledged The Rising Sun™ with a Gold Medal Plant Award in 2012.
How to use The Rising Sun™ Redbud in the landscape?
Simply stunning! The dark lavender blooms won't be the only show-stopping feature of this magnificent tree. Lime green foliage is highlighted by the new golden-orange foliage that emerges - quite a view to behold! The Rising Sun prefers full sun and foliage holds its color without burning. Great to use as a specimen or accent tree in all gardens, but due to its small stature, makes a splash in smaller landscapes.
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zone: 4-8
How To Plant The Rising Sun™ Redbud
Plant this tree in bright sun to bring out the full expression of its peachy-gold new leaves. It prefers a moist, well draining soil and be sure to apply an organic compost mulch around the base of your tree as it will help maintain moisture, regulate soil temperature and minimize root competition from grass or weeds.
How To Water
After planting, you need to give your new tree a deep and thorough watering, being sure to do so slowly. You should then water every two to three days through the summer months and then lessen to five to six as the tree begins to enter dormancy - watering needs when dormant are significantly less.
It’s important to give it plenty of water so that the leaves don’t scorch. However, waterlogged soils spell even more serious trouble for Redbuds, hastening disease. Although The Rising Sun™ prefers steady water, it did survive the horrendous Drought of 2007 that Tennessee experienced when the little tree was just a wee babe, which is remarkable.
Keep in mind that environmental factors - temperature, rainfall, and soil conditions - will alter watering needs. If you have specific questions regarding the watering of your Rising Sun™, contact our Plant Whisperers for guided watering assistance.
How To Fertilize
When planting, we recommend applying the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to both the hole and above, around the root zone, to be sure your tree is receiving the nutrients it needs to establish itself in your landscape. For the next three years, apply fertilizer in spring and fall for ongoing nutrient supplementation.
How To Prune
Considering the small stature of the Rising Sun™ Redbud, pruning may not be necessary. However, if needed, it is best to do so in late winter to early spring. Prune for overall shape and health of the tree buy removing any crossed or damaged branching. Trim out any leaves that emerge green from the base of the plant as, if left unchecked, they’ll overtake the yellow.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
