Why plant Camperdown Weeping Elm?

Camperdown Weeping Elm is a tree that the whole family will enjoy. Adults will love this unusual ornamental tree’s majestic cascading form and the touch of elegance it lends to the landscape. The little ones, on the other hand, will be excited to discover the “fort” that will appear under the canopy if you let its gracefully arching branches sweep the ground. Even after the kids are grown, they’ll have a soft spot in their hearts for this tree because of the good times they had playing beneath its branches. Maybe one day they’ll bring the grandkids over to play under it, too!

In 1835 David Taylor discovered a contorted branch of an elm tree growing in the forest at Camperdown House in Dundee Scotland. Taylor was the head forester to the Earl of Camperdown. He replanted the young tree within the gardens of Camperdown House where it still remains to this day. The original tree is less than 9 feet tall with a lovely weeping habit and unusual contorted structure. He created the Camperdown Elm by grafting it to the trunk of the Wych elm. Camperdown elms are grafted onto the trunk of a Wych elm (Ulmus glabra), which is the only elm species that the Camperdown will accept as a rootstock. The grafting is typically done 4–6 feet above the ground to produce an umbrella-shaped tree. The trunk will have a sudden change in bark pattern at about breast-height, where the Camperdown branch was grafted onto the rootstock. Every Camperdown Elm today originates from that mutant cutting found so long ago in Scotland.

How to use Camperdown Weeping Elm in the landscape?

This Elm is a legacy tree, a beautiful specimen and a kid's paradise all wrapped up in one! The weeping habit of this special Elm is just breathtaking, a graceful tree that would be welcome in any yard, large or small. The kids would have a ball playing beneath the arching branches and the branching structure of this magnificent tree is reason enough alone! Bright green foliage cover the arching branches throughout the season creating a cool and inviting space beneath.

How To Plant Camperdown Weeping Elm

Camperdown Elm is an adaptable tree, comfortable with frigid winters, less-than-perfect soils, and wet conditions. It’s partial to full sun, but will also grow in light shade. Being an Elm, it should come as no surprise that it plays host to some pests and diseases. It can contract Dutch Elm Disease, though it rarely does in the U.S., and Elm Leaf Beetles sometimes chew the leaves, though the damage is merely superficial and not life-threatening.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

A very low maintenance tree, little pruning work is required. Prune as needed in late winter or very early spring while the tree is still dormant.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
