Why plant Crimson Cloud Hawthorn?

Crimson Cloud Hawthorn is an undiscovered gem. Once you see it in bloom, you’ll wonder why there isn’t one on every block! You might start a trend when your neighbors see this small ornamental tree in your yard in late spring with its sweet red blossoms—each stamped with a bright white star. In fall, you and your family will be treated to a display of showy red berries that will feed hungry birds. Tough and durable, this adaptable tree makes a fine choice for urban gardens as well as for homes in the country and anyplace in between.

The name Hawthorn was given to trees and shrubs known for their small fruits (sometimes called “haws”) and their thorny branches. However, Crimson Cloud has almost no thorns at all. The greatest reward of this hawthorn is the beautiful clusters of red and white flowers as well as the red fruit that attracts birds – like the Cedar Waxwing. Hawthorns are native to most of Europe, and over thousands of years, Hawthorn myths have woven themselves into the fabric of daily life there. They have been said to bring good luck and bad and have been associated with love, death, marriage, fertility, slaying vampires, and luck in fishing! The Celts believed that sitting under a Hawthorn on May Day could get you spirited away to the Fairy World forever (don’t say we didn’t warn you). Crimson Cloud emerged in 1966 from the now defunct Princeton Nurseries of New Jersey.

How to use Crimson Cloud Hawthorn in the landscape?

You'll be wandering around with your head in the clouds once you see the superb spring floral display of this Hawthorn! This "almost thornless" Crimson Cloud provides you with large clusters of small red flowers with white centers, dark green leaves through summer and glossy red fruit in fall. Crimson Cloud Hawthorns are more disease resistant than other red flowering Hawthorns and one spiffy tree to include in your garden, whether as a cornerstone tree to your home or tucked in along the woods' edge!

How To Plant Crimson Cloud Hawthorn

When choosing a spot to plant your Hawthorn, pick a spot that will receive full sun, moist soil, and don’t plant it too close to other trees. Good air circulation and proper all-around maintenance of your Hawthorn will help reduce the chance of pests and diseases. Pests, such as aphids and Japanese Beetles, and diseases, such as rust, can pester Crimson Cloud Hawthorns if proper tree care is not achieved.

How To Water

After planting, you should give your new Hawthorn a deep and thorough watering. Do so slowly to ensure that the root ball is fully saturated and the roots are able to absorb water. For the first growing season, you should water ever two to four days, more so in the heat of summer or under drought conditions. As fall approaches, you can lessen your watering to every four to six days, stopping in winter. Mildly drought tolerant, you should assist with water if drought conditions are continuous.

How To Fertilize

When planting, we recommend that you use the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food - simply mix it in the hole before the tree is placed and then again as you create the care bed. Continue application each spring and fall for at least the first three years to ensure your tree has the proper nutrients needed to establish itself.

How To Prune

When it comes to pruning, prune your hawthorn every year for the first 3 or 4 years - this will help to improve the overall shape of your tree. The ideal time to do so is when it is dormant, in late winter to early spring. Remove any damaged or dead branches, as well as those that are crossing to open up the canopy. After the first few years of pruning, you may also prune when needed to maintain its shape as it matures, just be sure to prune after your hawthorn is done flowering - that is most certainly a show you don't want to miss!

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
