Why plant Whitespire Birch?
With snazzy white Birch bark that everybody loves, a Whitespire Birch tree planted in your front yard landscaping will give your home instant curb appeal. A grove of Whitespires in the backyard, on the other hand, will make for a magical get-away space. Lying in the cool grass on a warm summer day, while you look up at the delicate leaves twirl and flutter from their slender branches, you'll feel the worries of the day fade away. In fall, this stellar ornamental/shade tree will paint a lovely picture in your landscape when its dark green leave turn a radiant yellow. Fast-growing, native, and adaptable, too, it's no wonder this easygoing beauty is always in demand!
Whitespire Birch was a victim of mistaken identity for years. When Ed Hasselkus of the University of Wisconsin introduced this selection in 1983, he believed it to be a form of Asian White Birch. In 1993, when the original tree was 36 years old, an earlier mistake in the records was finally caught, and Whitespire was reclassified as a Gray Birch, which hails from the Northeastern U.S. It was a native all along! Whitespire outlasts wild trees, however. The original tree has still not succumbed to the dreaded bronze birch borer.
How to use Whitespire Birch in the landscape?
All the bad things you've heard about Birch will disappear when you select this magnificent tree. This is the most carefree Birch available today. Plant these wonderful trees in your front yard for added curb appeal. Use as a grove in your backyard to take advantage of its amazing supply of shade. Your magnificent Whitespire Birch is resistant to pests such as bronze Birch borer and Birch leaf miner; as well as uncontrollable occurrences like high temperatures and drought conditions. This beautiful Birch is wrapped in chalky white bark that doesn't exfoliate but gets brighter as it matures and is topped off with dark green leaves that turn yellow in fall.
Hardiness Zones: 3-6
How To Plant Whitespire Birch
Whitespire Birch has chalky white bark that doesn’t exfoliate and is the fastest growing of all Birches. They enjoy being planted in full sun with moist, well-drained soil, but the Whitespire Birch can also tolerate drier, rockier soils. Whitespire is resistant to Bronze Birch Borer and Birch Leaf Miner.
How To Water
Whitespire Birch will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
Best times to prune a Birch tree is around late spring and late fall/winter. Annual pruning promotes healthy fresh growth. Remove any dead or diseases branches.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
