Why plant Adirondack Flowering Crabapple?

Picture an Adirondack chair -- low-slung and laid-back, made for reclining in on a lazy Summer day. OK, this Tree is nothing like that! Adirondack Flowering Crabapple is a distinctive specimen that grows profoundly upright, standing strong and proud. It lifts the eye up to the sky. Valued also for its exceedingly profuse flower display, Adirondack is a knockout in Spring. Rosy red buds burst open and soon the canopy is covered in large (for a Crabapple) white flowers. In Fall, glossy red fruits appear, which songbirds usually devour by Christmas. A fine, formal element to add to any landscape!

There are hundreds of varieties of Crabapple Trees available, but most of the older selections have fallen by the wayside, replaced by newer Trees with superior ornamental qualities and greater disease resistance. Master plant breeder, Dr. Donald Egolf of the U.S. National Arboretum, developed Adirondack Flowering Crabapple. Selected from a group of 500 seedlings, it stood out not only for its unique form, but also for its unparalleled disease resistance. It was introduced to the public in 1987.

How To Plant Adirondack Flowering Crabapple

The Adirondack Crabapple is easy to please and makes a good Tree for novice gardeners. Plant it in an open, sunny area with good air circulation. Adirondack isn't pick about soil and will grow even in heavy clay as long as drainage is adequate. Use the Bower & Branch Elements™ Watering System to keep your Tree well supplied with water during the establishment period, so it can develop a strong root system. In subsequent years, it will be relatively drought tolerant. Do any pruning directly after blooming, except for suckers that appear at the base of the Tree, which may be removed at any time.

How To Water

As with all trees, keep your newly planted Crabapple watered. Do so slowly, deeply, and thoroughly every three to four days for the first growing season. Don’t keep the soil too wet, however, moist soil is fine. As it becomes established, it has some drought tolerance.

How To Fertilize

Crabapples like fertilizer, the more you give them – the more they grow. When planting, apply the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to ensure your tree has the nutrients it needs to get settled. Once a year apply a simple tree fertilizer during fall to help promote new growth and flowers for the following season.

How To Prune

With its small and columnar growth habit, pruning is only required for maintenance. Remove any damaged, dead, or crossed branches in late winter to early spring. Additionally, cut off any suckers around the base of your tree whenever they appear.

Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
