Why Plant Arizona Sun Blanket Flower?

Does your summer landscape suffer from a case of the blahs? Inject some energy into it with Arizona Sun Blanket Flower! This high-octane Spirit puts out a profusion of large, daisy-like blooms that are colored chili pepper–red with warm gold tips. The eye-popping contrast really makes you sit up and take notice. Although Arizona Sun puts on an exuberant show, the plant itself stays small and neat. Use it to front a mixed border, edge a pathway, or create a vibrant splash of color in a planter box. Fun, festive, and flamboyant, it brings excitement wherever it’s planted.

The modern Blanket Flower is the result of a pair of American wildflower Spirits that went on a European vacation. The Common Blanket Flower is a perennial species that grows in the western U.S. from North Dakota to Colorado and California. Indian Blanket is an annual species from the American Southwest. In a Belgian garden in 1857, the two species hybridized, producing the form most often grown by gardeners today. Despite the name, Arizona Sun is a variety that went back to Europe for further refinements. It was developed by the German firm Benary and hit our shores in 2005.

How to use Arizona Sun Blanket Flower in the landscape?

Flowers galore! Arizona Sun Blanket Flower is one of the longest-blooming Spirits you can buy. If you deadhead it (snip off the spent blooms), you may get flowers from late spring until frost. Towards the end of the season, let some blossoms go to seed. Goldfinches will appreciate it.

How To Plant Arizona Sun Blanket Flower

A hybrid of two western species, Arizona Sun Blanket Flower loves bright sunshine, low humidity, cool nights, and dry summers. The soil should be average to sandy, and sharp drainage is a must. Wet, clayey ground—especially in winter—will mean a short life. In the best of circumstances, Arizona Sun isn’t the longest-lived Spirit, but plants can be divided every couple of years to keep them robust (and you get more plants!). You can also grow new plants from seed. Deer and rabbits tend to have little interest in browsing Blanket Flowers, making them a great choice for many rural and suburban gardens.

How To Water

Water deeply and consistently during the first growing season. Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant.

How To Fertilize

Once these plants have become established, fertilization will not be needed. If you'd like to feed them, we recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food.

How To Prune

To encourage a non-stop flower show, be sure to remove spent blooms. In early spring, prune it back to about three inches above the ground - leaving the last round of spent blooms as a source of food for the birds.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
