Why plant Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry?

Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry is a spritely tree that brings a feeling of lightness and playfulness to the landscape. In early spring, it’s a cloud of bright white blossoms. In summer, the small, thin leaves flutter when breezes pass through or when songbirds swoop in to nab the ripe berries. In fall, the foliage turns warm shades of robin’s-breast orange and russet red. A moderately fast-growing tree, Autumn Brilliance® reaches its maximum height of 25 feet in only 10 years or so. Plant it singly or in groves, preferably against a dark wall or a background of evergreens, like Norway Spruce, to make the flowers really pop.

Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry was selected as a standout seedling by the late Willet “Bill” Wandell at his Illinois nursery in 1986. Bill was ahead of his time. Although native to every state in the Union except Hawaii, Serviceberries never enjoyed much popularity here until the 1990s. The name 'Serviceberry' stems from the tree’s gloomy association in days past with funeral services, as their blooms coincided with the ground having thawed enough for burials to resume. Its other common names, “Shadbush” (blooming when the shadfish spawn) and “Juneberry” (when the delicious fruits ripen) are considerably more upbeat.

How to use Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry in the landscape?

Can you take a guess why they call it Autumn Brilliance? Besides having brilliant red fall color and edible purple-black berries, this fast growing tree also produces white flower clusters in spring. Plant these brilliant trees as the main focal point in your garden and point a spotlight right into the canopy to enhance your nighttime landscape. Surrounding a pond or any water feature, and mass planted with other complementing trees are perfect places for the Serviceberry. This tree is quite the multi-tasker if you ask me!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zones: 4-9

How To Plant Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry

Wild Serviceberries are often found at the forest’s edge, so it comes as no surprise that Autumn Brilliance also appreciates a site that receives dappled shade, or at least some protection from the mid-day sun. News of ripe Serviceberries spreads like wildfire among our feathered friends, so to salvage any for yourself, you’ll have to net the plant before they ripen. Also, the beech-like gray bark is handsome, but thin, so keep string trimmers well away from the trunk. Otherwise, Autumn Brilliance is carefree!

How To Water

Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

Prune your Autumn Brilliance® Serviceberry from late winter to early spring. Remove any suckers you may see growing to maintain a single stem form.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
