Why plant Chinkapin Oak?

A very special tree you’ll never find at the box stores! Chinkapin Oak is a hard-to-find shade tree that will make a marvelous native specimen for your lawn. In time, this picturesque Oak develops a rounded outline, with wavy branches that give it a sculptural feel. In summer, the leaves dance in the wind, flashing their silvery undersides. In autumn, the foliage takes on warm golden to golden-brown tones. Should you choose Chinkapin Oak, give this long-lived legacy tree a place of honor in your landscape. Magnificent trees over 400 years old are known to exist in Kentucky and Texas!

Although Chinkapin Oak is rarely planted, it’s not because it’s some new, exotic discovery. Chinkapin Oak is native to the U.S., from Wisconsin to Vermont and south to New Mexico and South Carolina. Its range also extends into Mexico. Nowhere is it a dominant tree, but it is most plentiful near the center of its range—along the Ohio River, in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. In years past, its wood was used in those states to build fences, and later to fuel the steamships that traveled up and down the Ohio River.

How to use Chinkapin Oak in the landscape?

Blue jay buffet! Chinkapin Oak acorns are possibly the sweetest-tasting of all acorns, and they’re a hit with blue jays, squirrels, chipmunks, and all sorts of wildlife. They’re edible for humans, too, if you want to give your trail mix a twist (you can roast them first or eat them raw). This species is one of the most precocious Oaks (producing its first acorns at a young age), so you won’t have to wait forever to start getting those sweet snacks.

How To Plant Chinkapin Oak

Plant Chinkapin Oak in a site where it will receive all-day sun. Clay soil is no problem. Alkaline (high pH) soil is also acceptable, which is unusual for Oaks. Many Oaks, particularly the popular Pin Oak, will turn chlorotic (yellow) on alkaline soils, but Chinkapin Oak often grows on those types of soils in the wild and is perfectly adapted to them. The fungal disease Oak Wilt can strike when Oaks are pruned during active growth. A member of the White Oak Group, Chinkapin Oak is less susceptible to Oak Wilt than members of the Red Oak Group, but it is still vulnerable.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

A very low maintenance tree, so little pruning work is needed. Prune as needed in late winter or very early spring while the tree is still dormant.

How Does Shipping Work?

Bower & Branch Trees, the real BIG trees, don’t fit in a box! Our large trees require expert delivery and care, that means our large trees are shipped on Bower & Branch trucks. We are the only ones who know how to ship our big and bigger trees and plants with tender loving care.

We deliver your trees and plants directly to your driveway or curbside! Ask Bower & Branch about planting services and rates – we'd be happy to assist in installation.

*Big trees and shrubs, Size XL (A) and bigger, will take approximately 2 to 4 weeks to be delivered. - Sizes Large (AA) and smaller (Treelings, Shrubs, Bushes, and Perennials) will be shipped directly to your home by a local common carrier in a plant-safe box.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
