Why the Color Guard Adam's Needle?

Color, color everywhere! Adam's Needle is a splash of color from the striped foliage with white strips against a dark green background to the snowy blooms that grow on upright spires, this yucca has much to offer the landscape. The spires of white blooms provide a nice flowery fragrance during the summer when other flowering plants take a break from the heat. You will want to be careful, though. Adam's Needle is named for a reason, and you will want to watch where you touch, the ends can be pointy and scratch anyone nearby.

Color Guard is a cultivar of Yucca filamentosa, a wild ornamental grass commonly found growing on sand dunes in the southeastern US. The unique variegated leaves make Color Guard stand out from other yuccas and also makes this one very easy to identify. Yuccas are unique in that only a certain species of moth, the yucca moth, can pollinate the flowers. The reason why yucca flowers smell the most fragrant at night is because they are trying to attract the female moths to the flowers for pollination; each flower is specifically designed to only allow this moth to enter. Every time a female moth visits a yucca flower, she leaves behind eggs that will live off of the developing seeds in the yucca plant.

How to use in the landscape?

This yucca is full of color and flair! Color Guard is an exotic-looking accent with bright green and creamy yellow spiked leaves perfect for containers or dry gardens. Summertime brings with it creamy white flowers that hang like little bells off of the stems that are mixed in with the colorful leaves. Each bloom is sweetly fragrant, especially in the evening. Color Guard has fantastic fall color that consists of the leaf spikes turning to pink and red tones.
