Why Plant Crimson Pointe™ Flowering Plum?
Even small gardens have room for Crimson Pointe™ Purple Leaf Plum, a new ornamental tree that slips easily into tight spaces to bring a splash of burgundy-red color all season. This tall, slim, ravishing redhead will catch your eye with her fragrant sparkling white blossoms in spring, but it’s her alluring rich red foliage that will win your heart. New foliage has an orange-bronze hue. But the best part is that this tree will only spread to about 6' wide - definitely what I would call a columnar tree! This tree creates the perfect opportunity for you to add a splash of burgundy color to your garden!
Crimson Pointe™ came to be at Lake County Nursery, the well-known and well-respected nursery of the Zampini family of Northern Ohio. Jim Zampini spotted the unusual, skinny plant growing ramrod straight in a field of round-headed Newport Plums in 1983. It had found its way in somehow as a chance seedling. In 2008, it was added to LCN’s long list of fine introductions (you will see ‘zam’, for ‘Zampini,’ in the official botanical names of all of their selections). There has been no plant quite like it before or since!
How to use Crimson Pointe™ Flowering Plum in the landscape?
Plant Crimson Pointe™ as a single specimen to play off of other plants’ shapes and colors, or plant a row of trees along your property line for a moderately fast-growing privacy screen that you and the neighbors will both appreciate.

How To Plant Crimson Pointe™ Flowering Plum
Purple Leaf Plums are fast growing trees, and Crimson Pointe™ is no exception. It will be standing tall like a sentinel in your landscape in no time. They prefer a well-draining soil but can tolerate a wide range, including clay soils. Japanese beetles may munch the leaves, but they rarely do serious damage. Crimson Pointe™ does produce some small, edible plums. They’re not produced in abundance, so they won’t be a huge maintenance issue, but keep in mind that there will be a few fruits falling down.
How To Water
Once established, the Crimson Pointe™ has remarkable drought tolerance, though regular water will result in the fastest growth. However, when freshly planted, it is best to water slowly, deeply, and thoroughly for the first growing season to ensure healthy root growth.
How To Fertilize
When planting, we recommend applying the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food. Simply mix it in with the soil before you plant your tree, and then again as you create the care bed. Reapply each spring and fall for the first three years to be sure your tree has the nutrients it needs to establish a strong and healthy root system.
How To Prune
With its upright and tight growth habit, the Crimson Pointe™ Flowering Plum does not require much pruning. In late winter to early spring, remove any damaged or diseased branches that you may see. Additionally, prune out any crossed branching as that my weaken the overall branching structure.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
