Why plant Diabolo® Ninebark?

Diabolo Ninebark is a bold, beautiful plant that has taken the gardening world by storm in recent years. What's all the fuss about? Chocolate-purple foliage, white half-snowball flowers, cherry-red fruits, and flaky bark - that's what! With all that going for it, you might expect it to be a bit of a diva, but it's sinfully easy to grow. Don't worry about counting the bark, check out those leaves! Amazingly beautiful, reddish-purple leaves line up on the arching branches. Beautiful, white flowers showcase themselves in summer. Exceptional color for your landscape. A must have! This native selection is a Gold Medal Plant Award winner from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for its outstanding performance, hardiness and eye-appeal.

Europeans are famous for taking under-appreciated American plants, improving them, and re-gifting them back to us. Such is the case with Ninebark (so named because the flaky bark appears to have nine layers). Diabolo was discovered in a German nursery in 1968—the only red-leaved plant in a sea of 120,000 green ones (Germans must really like their Ninebarks!).

How to use Diabolo® Ninebark in the landscape?

Plant this fast-growing shrub near your patio, pool, porch, or front walk for a punch of color all season long. You'll soon understand why we think Diabolo Ninebark is a "10"!

How To Plant Diabolo® Ninebark

Despite the name, Diabolo is an easygoing guy. Give this plant full sun or very light shade, and average moisture (it can even handle drought-like periods once established), and it will give you a fresh crop of burgundy foliage each year. Little in the way of pests or diseases bothers it.

How To Water

After you receive your Diabolo® Ninebark it should be watered regularly to help establish the roots. One the plant has established, they are rather drought-tolerant and you won’t have to water as much.

How To Fertilize

In spring, before blooms arrive go ahead and feed your Ninebark! We recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food for that little boost of growth.

How To Prune

Diabolo is a fast grower so don’t be hesitant about pruning it if you want it to have a nice, dense head of foliage.
