Why plant Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress?
Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress is a ray of sunshine that will light up your landscape all year-round! This perky specimen evergreen tree will bring some pizzazz to your entryway garden, foundation beds, or the plantings around your pool or patio with its dazzling lemon-yellow color. Each branch ends in a delicate flattened fernlike “frond” of luminous yellow foliage, which is how Fernspray Gold gets its name. This one doesn’t get as big as other Hinokis, like the equally popular gold-leaved form, Crippsii, and is a smart choice for smaller gardens. It will grow more impressive each year without becoming imposing or out of scale with the rest of your landscape.
Hinoki Cypress is a revered forest tree of Japan that is grown the world over. The tree in its natural state becomes a towering giant, but a bonanza of forms have arisen over the years that stay much smaller. In addition, some of these selections have an upright habit while others are rounded, and some have yellow or white variegation or uniquely shaped foliage. You could make a whole garden out of the different types of Hinokis! Fernspray Gold originated in 1975 at a specialty nursery in New Zealand called Duncan & Davies. Its beautiful feathery yellow foliage was an instant hit.
How to use Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress in the landscape?
Fernspray Gold Hinoki’s artistic form sets it apart from other specimen trees and even from many Hinoki Cypresses. It assumes a conical shape like most conifers, but its branches are spaced a little further apart than others, creating an especially picturesque silhouette. Place Fernspray Gold against a solid background of a contrasting color to highlight both the stunning yellow foliage and the sculptural shape.

How To Plant Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress
Give Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress plenty of sunshine and regular water to keep it looking sharp. It will grow in shade as well, but the lemony foliage will become much more green. Some protection from icy winter winds will prevent the foliage from getting windburned, which can happen in harsh climates. Hinoki Cypress sometimes gets a few brown leaves in its interior; simply remove them by running your fingers through the soft foliage. Otherwise, Fernspray Gold should be low-maintenance and quite self-sufficient. Insects rarely have any interest in it, and diseases seldom strike if its cultural requirements are met.
How To Water
Water your Fernspray Gold Hinoki immediately after planting. You should water deeply every three to four days for the first growing season.
How To Fertilize
Be sure to fertilize your Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress with the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food. Be sure to reapply each spring and fall for the first three years - this will ensure your tree is receiving the nutrients it needs to thrive.
How To Prune
Due to the slow growth rate, pruning your Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress may not be required. Shaping can be done if desired, do so in early spring before new growth begins to flush.
Frequently Asked Questions
This can be normal with any evergreen. Like all trees, evergreens do drop foliage - but not all at once. They also tend to drop their foliage from inner positions - so that browning is normal. It can also occur on outer foliage, but usually to a lesser extent.
Are you keeping up with watering? Browning foliage can be a sign that your evergreen needs more water. Deep, consistent waterings are essential until the tree is established.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
