Why plant Fire Chief™ American Arborvitae Big?

Does your landscape need a spark? Fire Chief™ Globe Arborvitae will generate a five-alarm fire! This dynamic performer will give you color, color, color throughout the year. In spring, the new growth emerges a brilliant gold, soon developing warm orange-red tips that last throughout the growing season. Plant it where the sun will shine through its soft foliage and light it up like a bonfire. Part of our Firefly line, it works great as a single specimen, planted wherever you need a pop of color. For a real jolt, consider planting a row of Fire Chief™ Arborvitaes to make a low hedge that dazzles.

It’s hard to believe, but Fire Chief™ Globe Arborvitae is an Eastern Arborvitae, just like Emerald Arborvitae and the Arbs that grow wild in the eastern U.S. and Canada. Although they look nothing alike, they’re the same species. Kind of like Chihuahuas and Great Danes. Fire Chief™ originated as a single branch mutation of an older Arborvitae selection called Rheingold. Rheingold has an orange cast to it at certain times of the year, but this one branch showed deeper red coloration over a longer period. The branch was propagated, and the new plant was introduced in 2007.

How to use Fire Chief™ American Arborvitae Big in the landscape?

Fire Chief™ Arborvitae naturally forms a neat globe shape, even without pruning. This low-maintenance addition to your landscape will take up little of your time. It is also less likely to splay open than the older Rheingold variety, which has a weaker branching structure.

How To Plant Fire Chief™ American Arborvitae Big

Give Fire Chief™ Globe Arborvitae a site in all-day sun to bring out the richest tones in its foliage. Shade will turn the leaves green. It isn’t too fussy about soil, but the soil should drain well. Water regularly—especially during the first year or two of establishment—and mulch with shredded bark, wood chips, or pine straw to keep the root zone cool and moist. This plant may struggle in the extreme heat and humidity of the Deep South.

How To Water

Fire Chief™ Globe Arborvitae will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

Little pruning will be needed, but you can give Fire Chief™ a light shaping you wish.
