Why plant Green Gem Boxwood in Bulk?

Clean, crisp, and classic. Green Gem Boxwood was made for manicured, formal gardens. Its lustrous, evergreen foliage and tidy habit make it the ideal shrub for those high-visibility areas of your landscape that must present a sharp image all year-round. Growing into a small, tight ball, Green Gem naturally lends itself to use as a neat, low hedge or border. Plant it in a straight line, or let it trace the gentle curves of your beds and borders. It will add structure and bring pleasant greenery into the depths of winter for years to come.

A trip to Europe may make you fall in love with the symmetry and order of formal English, French, German, or Italian gardens. These gardens nearly always make use of English Boxwood hedges to define spaces and create an evergreen framework. However, recreating this look in the U.S. can be difficult with English Boxwood, because it isn’t hardy in colder parts of the country. Green Gem to the rescue! This hybrid, crossed with the cold-hardy Korean Boxwood and released in the 1970s, gives a similar effect, but it can handle winter lows to -20ºF. It’s one of the most popular Boxwoods sold in the U.S.

How to use Green Gem Boxwood in Bulk in the landscape?

Green Gem Boxwood naturally assumes a dense globe shape, but you can shear it to produce an even more polished appearance if you like. A light trim once or twice a year will keep it looking picture-perfect.

How To Plant Green Gem Boxwood in Bulk

Good drainage is essential when growing Green Gem Boxwood. It will tolerate many types of soil and will even grow in clay, but the soil must drain well or the plant may fall prey to root rot diseases. This is a shallow-rooting plant, so mulch well to keep the root zone cool and moist (but not wet). Green Gem grows splendidly in both sun and in a quite a bit of shade. The foliage does have a tendency to turn bronzy orange when exposed to icy winter winds, however, so give the plant a sheltered site if winters are severe in your area. Deer rarely browse boxwoods, we are happy to report.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food in the granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
