      Why plant Jersey Knight Asparagus?

Drizzle it with olive oil, season it, roast, and enjoy! Asparagus is one of the most versatile and vigorous vegetables to grow, and definitely a tasty side to any meal! You'll want to plant asparagus deeper than most plants, about 12 inches deep, so the succulent spears can have room to grow and reach through the soil. Once established, Jersey Knight Asparagus is a low maintenance and hardy grower and a bonus - it's a perennial! Enjoy crispy and delicious asparagus for many springs to come!

Planting and harvesting asparagus can be traced back 2000 years ago, and its origins are based in the Mediterranean. A cousin, distant, of the onion, this vegetable can be dated back to the leek. Greeks believed that asparagus contained aphrodisiac qualities and would study it for pharmaceutical uses. Utilized by the Greek doctor Hippocrates, asparagus has a compound named asparagines that contain diuretic properties. Romans also enjoyed asparagus for its gastronomic qualities and would consume it in various forms.

How to use Jersey Knight Asparagus in the landscape?

Jersey Knight will be your knight in shining armor for gardens that consist of clay soil. A vicarious performer, Jersey Knight will produce heavy crops that are tender and ideal for eating fresh, salads, or cooking. Spears can range in size from medium to large, and this variation of asparagus is tolerant to rust, root rot, and fusarium. Jersey Knight plants fan out into a fern-like appearance before sprouting the desired vegetables.

How To Plant Jersey Knight Asparagus

There is no need to overly spoil this guy; Jersey Knight can tolerate clay soil to humid areas. As a predominately male variant, concern over self-seeding is low; however, Jersey Knight is also self-pollinating. To create the best environment for Jersey Knight to thrive, the soil should have average to medium moisture and well-draining. Production of crops takes around 2-3 years; crops should be harvested from April to May. Keep garden bed free of weeds; this variant is cold and heat tolerant.

      How To Water

Water asparagus thoroughly, and regularly. It is important to keep top few inches of soil moist in summer.

      How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
