Why the Karl Foerster's Feather Reed Grass?
Ten-HUT! Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass stands at attention. This popular Fringe starts growing early in the season and sends up soft, fluffy plumes in late spring or early summer. Within a few weeks, however, the plumes tighten up, becoming rigid and arrow-straight. The buff-colored spikes persist throughout summer and fall and last well into winter, imparting a crisp, clean, formal look to your landscape. Great as a single specimen and even better en masse, Karl Foerster will bring a sleek and sophisticated vertical accent to the landscape beds around your home.
Feather Reed Grass is a naturally occurring hybrid Fringe native to Europe. It was correctly identified as a hybrid in the early 1900s by—you guessed it—Karl Foerster, a legendary German nurseryman. Foerster is remembered for defying the Nazis in WWII by hiring Jewish friends at his nursery. He also refused Nazi orders to grow only “pure,” native German plants—he simply grew the best plants he could find, no matter where they were from. This lovely Fringe is the most popular plant that bears his name. It can now be found in gardens around the world.

How To Plant
Growing Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass couldn’t be simpler. This fast-growing Fringe likes a spot in full sun, but it will tolerate part shade. Give it regular water in any type of soil. Clay soil is fine as long as it has decent drainage. Karl Foerster can withstand temperatures down to -30ºF, and the plant will pop back up time and again after rain and snow flatten it down. Cut it back to within a few inches of the ground in late winter, before new growth emerges in early spring. Feed at that time with Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer.
How To Water
Water as soon as they arrive! Grasses need to be watered regularly to maintain evenly moist soil for proper establishment in the landscape.
Hardiness Zone: 4-7
