Why plant Katsura Japanese Pieris?

Most evergreens earn their place in the landscape simply by having nice green foliage all year-round. Katsura Andromeda does so much more. This dynamic evergreen Accent goes above and beyond the call of duty. In late winter, it delights with sprays of dainty, pale pink to creamy white flowers that release a lovely perfume. Later on, another show gets underway. New foliage emerges a sultry burgundy-red color, making a dramatic contrast with the older green leaves. The effect may continue into summer with flushes of new growth. Give Katsura a high-visibility spot near your patio, porch, or front door, and enjoy the performance!

Japanese Pieris is often called Andromeda, although few who use that name realize the rather gruesome story behind it. According to Greek myth, Andromeda was a beautiful princess who was chained to a rock as an offering to a sea monster. The “chains” of flowers on this plant represent her own chains. (We’re happy to report that Perseus rescued the fair maiden before any harm was done.) Pieris is native to Japan, Taiwan, and eastern China. Katsura Andromeda was discovered at the nursery of Japanese plantsman Yoshimichi Hirose in 1986. He patented the lucky find in 2002.

How to use Katsura Japanese Pieris in the landscape?

Andromeda is in the same family as Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Blueberries. This family of plants in general likes moist but well-drained, acid soils with lots of organic matter, and KatsuraAndromeda is no exception. Many of these plants also like afternoon shade in hot climates, and it is in a bit of shade where this Andromeda shines its brightest. If Azaleas and Rhododendrons do well in your area, then Katsura may be a natural to invite into your landscape.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 5-8

How To Plant Katsura Japanese Pieris

Not a plant for regions with extremes of heat and cold, Andromeda prefers the more moderate temperatures of its Japanese homeland and does best where those conditions can be replicated. Plant Katsura Andromeda in acidic, moisture-retentive but not boggy soil in a site protected from both intense afternoon sunlight and strong winds. Heavy clay soils that retain too much water invite a deadly root rot disease. On the other hand, drought can take its toll as well. Applying an organic mulch and providing a steady supply of water will help give Katsura what it needs to thrive.

How To Water

Provide a medium amount of water on a regular basis. Plants that are in containers will need consistent watering their whole life.

How To Fertilize

Feed annually, in the early spring to support the plant throughout the season. We recommend feeding with our Elements Starter Plant Food.

How To Prune

Pieris blooms on last years wood, so waiting to prune until flowering is over is recommended.
