Why plant Limelight Hydrangea?

Don't become green with envy if you see your neighbors' new Limelight Hardy Hydrangea in full bloom this year... bring your own home today! This unique hydrangea has green blooms, that's correct - green flowers! As the seasons progress, the green blooms change over to pink in late summer into fall. What a color show! Limelight is not just great for color, plant multiple to create your own hydrangea hedge or use as a specimen that everyone will love. This hardy shrub's bloom clusters make great cut flower arrangements for table settings or as a gift to a special someone. What are you waiting for, bring home Limelight today!

Hydrangeas were studied in Japan by Philip Franz von Siebold in the early 1800's while he was there working for the Dutch East India Company. He is responsible for introducing them to Europe and from there they traveled to America. We owe him thanks because, without him, we would not have glorious hydrangea blooms in our gardens and landscapes. Limelight Hydrangea was developed in Boskoop, Netherlands in 1986 and, along with its paniculata companions, has become extremely popular in US landscapes.

How to use Limelight Hydrangea in the landscape?

Limelight Hydrangeas like to be the center of attention, so in order to keep us watching, their flower colors change throughout the growing season. At first they emerge creamy white, then mature to a chartreuse -lime. As the season progresses they change to pink, then rose, and eventually fade to beige. The flowers will remain on the plant through the winter to remind us that new ones will be arriving in spring!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zones: 3-9

How To Plant Limelight Hydrangea

Limelight Hydrangea performs best in areas that receive full sun, with afternoon shade in warmer climates. This plant requires well drained soils that do not remain soggy.

How To Water

They require keeping the soil moist (not too wet) after initial planting. Once established, they are more tolerant of drought conditions, reducing your hand-watering responsibilities.

How To Fertilize

The best time to fertilize your Limelight Hydrangea is in spring and then again in late summer to early fall. This will allow your Hydrangea to have all it needs as it grows!

How To Prune

The blooms appear on new wood, so do not prune in late winter or early spring. Pruning is best done after the flowers are spent.
