Why plant Louisa Weeping Flowering Crabapple?

Try as you might to hold back the tears - it'll be a tough task when you set your eyes on this weeper! Louisa Weeping Crabapple will paint a pretty spring picture in your yard when its medium-pink flower buds burst open to create a waterfall of soft shell pink blossoms. Local honeybees will appreciate the sweet-smelling flowers, and by visiting them will ensure that tons of yellow-orange crabapples will follow in fall for the birds. Glossy dark green leaves carry on through the summer as small yellow fruit form to give you quite an outstanding autumnal show! Louisa Weeping Crabapples also have good disease resistance and drought tolerance, making this a lovely addition to any landscape!

Growing trees from seed is a slow and uncertain way to create a landscape. Not only does it take years for trees to reach a substantial size, but you never know exactly what you’ll get. But this was the passion of Polly Hill of Martha’s Vineyard, who created an arboretum on her 60-acre property from plants grown mostly from seed. One of those plants was ‘Louisa,’ which she named after her daughter in 1962. In 2007, Polly passed away at the age of 100, but her arboretum lives on today.

How to use Louisa Weeping Flowering Crabapple in the landscape?

What sets this particular Crabapple apart from most is its elegant weeping habit that makes it look a bit like a weeping Cherry tree. Let it weep all the way to the ground, and the kids will have a good hide-and-seek spot under its canopy! The sweet blooms and graceful weeping habit make this a stunning addition to cottage gardens or as a specimen tree in your front yard.

How To Plant Louisa Weeping Flowering Crabapple

Louisa Weeping Flowering Crabapple prefers a fertile, well-draining soil but grows well in a wide range of soil conditions. It should be planted in a sunny area of your yard but they can tolerate very light shade as well.

How To Water

The key to watering well is to do so slowly, deeply, and thoroughly. For the first growing season, we recommend that you water your new tree well every three to four days. Don’t keep the soil too wet, however, moist soil is fine. Once established, your tree will be drought tolerant.

How To Fertilize

Crabapples like fertilizer, the more you give them – the more they grow. When planting, apply the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to ensure your tree has the nutrients it needs. For ongoing care, once a year apply a simple tree fertilizer during fall to help promote new growth and flowers for the following season.

How To Prune

With its small, weeping growth habit, pruning is only required to remove damaged or dying branches. It is best to do this in late winter. Also remove any suckers around the base of your tree whenever they appear as these will 'suck' the nutrients from your tree.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
