Why plant Magness European Pear?

Beyond Com'pear'! Known as the king of European Pears, Magness Pear is the essence of pure pear flavor. Sweet, perfumed fruit with a delicious buttery texture ripening in your backyard in late summer for a fall feast! This easy to care for and disease-resistant tree produces some hefty sized fruit to fill up an entire pie, and then some! It doesn't mind a little chilly weather and can withstand a tough winter. Magness and all of those sweet-toothed gardeners out there are the perfect pear! Fill your backyard with the joys of an edible landscape with Magness European Pears.

Named after Dr. John R. Magness, who was a long-time director of the USDA’s apple and pear breeding programs in the 1960s. Its parents are Comice pear and Seckel pear, not a bad pairing.

How to use Magness European Pear in the landscape?

Magness European Pear trees can be an ornament to your yard. Not only do they bring flavorful fruits, but also sweet-scented delightful white blossoms. These beautiful trees work just about anywhere, whether you want them flourishing in your yard or lined in a row to offer some more privacy. These trees give wonderful shade over your patios or garden beds! Nothing a little at-home orchard won’t fix!

Magness European Pear is a sterile tree but can be pollinated by European or Asian Pear trees. This hardy tree is disease resistant to fire blight, and due to its thicker skin is less susceptible to insect damage! Think this fruit couldn't get any more delicious? It ripens to perfection while still hanging on the tree, just waiting for you to bite into it!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 5-9

How To Plant Magness European Pear

Plant your Magness European Pear Tree where it can bask in all-day sun and enjoy moderately rich, well-drained soil at its feet. Avoid low-lying areas, where late frosts can zap the early spring blossoms. You’ll need to have another variety of Pear nearby to pollinate the blooms and enable good fruit set.

How To Water

Your young Magness Pear tree will need ample water while it grows! With little to no dry time, this plant will flourish. It is recommended to water when fruiting to protect your plant and your money!

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

Pruning is all up to your tree’s size. It is important to maintain a spacious canopy for sunlight and airflow. It is important to remove some fruit, crossing branches, dead branches, and any suckers growing from the base of the trunk/roots once a year to promote healthy fruit sprouting.

Pruning your fruit tree should take place in the late winter or early spring to protect their overall health and hardiness. Taking away the winter dieback on your tree will make more room for new growth!

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
