Why plant Natchez Crape Myrtle?

When the days get hot and steamy, Natchez Crape Myrtle stays cool and collected with its frosty white blossoms that last all summer. This small ornamental specimen tree has a sleek, polished look that’s perfect for high visibility areas around your home near your favorite entertaining, dining, and relaxing spaces. Plant it close at hand because you and your guests will want to stroke the smooth cinnamon and tan marbled trunks—as well as get a first-row view of this stunner’s fabulous flowers, sizzling orange-red fall color, and clean mildew-free foliage.

André Michaux was born in 1796 in Versailles France and thanks to lessons learned from his father became, a gifted grower. After losing his beloved wife during childbirth just 11 months after they were married, Michaux was devastated. With a love of country, he devoted himself to the study of botany and was determined to make himself useful to France. In 1782, he traveled to the Middle-east. For three years he collected plants and seeds, enduring many hardships along the way. His determination did not go unnoticed and after arriving home was asked to lead an expedition to North America in search for new species of trees to rebuild depleted forests that were stripped during years of war. Appointed by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette in 1785, he set out for North America with a small group, including his now 15 year old son, François. For years Michaux explored a young America, shipping new plant varieties to France as well as introducing new plants to America such as Mimosa and Lagerstroemia.

How to use Natchez Crape Myrtle in the landscape?

Although it has a Native American tribal name, Natchez Crape Myrtle isn’t a native tree. However, it does make an environmentally friendly addition to your landscape. This water-wise tree needs little irrigation once established, and its crisp white flowers are a pollinator’s paradise!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 7-10

How To Plant Natchez Crape Myrtle

Crape Myrtles take all the heat you throw at ‘em, and Natchez is no exception. This is a tree you’ll see all over the South. Natchez will grow in warmer parts of the North as well, but it won’t get as big as it will in Georgia or Mississippi. If winter lows regularly drop to the single digits, the tree may get only 10 feet all (versus 25’ in the South). If lows drop below 0°F, it may die to the ground but bounce back from the roots come spring.

How To Water

While in the process of establishing, Crape Myrtles may need more watering during the hot summer seasons. Once these trees are established, you can rely on rainfall to water them! Water once or twice weekly while these trees are still young.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

To encourage a plethora of blooms, only light pruning is needed. Remove any dead and damaged branches.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
