The fall scene is the showstopper, with fiery red glow the foliage turns to a bright ruby red fall. Your neighbors will be sure to double-take. This shrub has a rugged columnar growth habit that will stand tall and strong. These sophisticated plants have incredible rust resistance, tolerates salt, urban conditions, and will even be drought tolerant when established.

Japanese Barberries are fun and useful plants that keep getting more and more popular. Even though they’re armed with small prickles, gardeners have embraced them, because they come in so many interesting shapes and colors. Orange Rocket lifted off from the Czech Republic. Nurseryman Michal Andrusiv wanted to know what would happen if he crossed Aurea, a bright yellow Barberry with a rounded form, with Helmond Pillar, a narrowly upright Barberry with burgundy leaves. The result has rocketed to the top of many people’s wish lists! Introduced in 2006, it continues to be a standout among the many Barberry choices available today.

How to use Orange Rocket Barberry in the landscape?

This shrub is known for its beautiful spring and fall color, so it is recommended to plant this fiery fella somewhere you can really see it. Orange Rocket Barberry works amazingly as a low hedge as it has a slight columnar shape that gives it a step up. Use Rocket Barberry shrubs as a foundation plant, use as borders, or even plant these babies in containers to spice up your patios.

How To Plant Orange Rocket Barberry

Grow Orange Rocket Barberry in full sun to bring out its richest colors. Shade will make the leaves turn green. Choose a site where the soil drains freely, as this plant will not tolerate “wet feet.”

How To Water

When freshly planted, the Orange Rocket prefers regular watering, deeply at the base. After it is established, it will be quite drought tolerant!

How To Fertilize

Fertilize your Barberry at the beginning of the spring with our Elements Starter Plant Food for a growth boost.

How To Prune

The best time to prune your Orange Rocket is in late spring, after the new growth has flushed out. You can also trim it up to keep any stray branches from spoiling the tidy appearance of this formal plant!
