Why plant Pink Icing® Blueberry?

With breathtaking foliage, big burly blueberries holding robust flavor, and a gorgeous iridescent turquoise transformation in autumn - this may be the icing on the cake to your edible gardening this summer! Bushel and Berry® Pink Icing® Blueberry is a self-pollinating wonder that is the perfect size for decorative pots or plant in the garden for year-round color and beauty! Let’s not forget blueberries for days! Grab a handful to eat right off the bush, and keep a few for delicious breakfast muffins! Build un-berry-ably sweet memories with the family for years to come!

Through careful breeding of Vaccinium corymbosum, David Brazelton and Adam Wagner of Fall Creek Farm & Nursery, Inc. have created another excellent blueberry variety, Pink Icing. To achieve the final product, Brazelton and Wagner cross-bred three of their earlier blueberry variants: ‘Ivanhoe,’ ‘Toro,’ and ‘Earliblue.’ In 2013, Brazelton and Wagner patented what was then known as ‘ZF06-079’ to the more easy-to-remember name of Pink Icing.

How to use Pink Icing® Blueberry in the landscape?

Sweet and savory, Pink Icing will steal the attention in your landscape. You'll notice first the various shades of pink, blue, and deep green foliage that keep up with its coloring all year! In fall, the leaves will change color to a nice turquoise-purple that will remain throughout the winter. With berries ripe in July, you will have all the fresh fruit you need for your next BBQ! Each berry is sweet and flavorful, perfect for all to enjoy! Each plant can produce up to 4 lbs of berries a year, with crops becoming heavier and heavier as the years go by.

How To Plant Pink Icing® Blueberry

Acid soil is key to growing Blueberries successfully. These peat-loving Accents require very low–pH conditions to thrive. If your soil isn’t naturally acidic, you may want to grow Pink Icing Blueberry in a large container or raised bed. Give it all-day sun if possible and use lots of organic matter—both as a soil amendment and mulch. Even though Pink Icing is self-pollinating, you may want to plant other blueberry varieties to increase your yearly berry yield.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

Not much pruning is required, however, you can prune in late winter to early sprung to thin out the branching. This will help maintain the plant size and make harvesting easier.
