Why plant Princeton Sentry® Maidenhair Tree?
Slim and stately, tall and true. Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo will be a dashing addition to your landscape. Rising like a spire, it creates drama in the vertical plane. Eventually, it widens a bit to form a compact pyramid. A single tree will serve as a powerful focal point, while a pair of trees can be sited to frame a scenic view or to anchor the corners of your home. With its neat habit and tough constitution, Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo also makes the perfect street tree. This versatile tree is ready to fulfill many roles in your landscape!
The Ginkgo is an ancient Chinese tree valued as much for its beauty as for its durability. Its unique, fan-shaped leaves and its tolerance for all kinds of challenging growing conditions have made it a favorite landscape tree around the world. In Hiroshima, Japan, several Ginkgo Trees growing near ground zero even survived the atomic bomb. They continue to flourish to this day. Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo resulted from a seed germinated at Princeton Nursery in New Jersey in the 1940s. It was selected for its tight, symmetrical growth habit and strong central leader. Another huge plus: it’s a male! Female Ginkgos produce terrible-smelling fruits in the fall.
How to use Princeton Sentry® Maidenhair Tree in the landscape?
The iconic fan-like leaves of the Ginkgo are like those of no other tree. They have been a common motif in Asian art through the ages. The olive-green leaves of your Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo will make a lovely show all season long, until autumn, when they’ll really shine. The little fans will turn a luminous yellow color, bathing your landscape in a golden glow.

How To Plant Princeton Sentry® Maidenhair Tree
You won’t find a tree that’s easier to grow than Princeton Sentry® Ginkgo! Plant it green up in a sunny site in soil that drains well, and your tree should be happy. Ginkgos are often planted in cities because of their adaptability, and Princeton Sentry® is no exception. It tolerates compacted soil, high pH, salt, clay, pollution, and drought. Virtually no insect pests or diseases ever touch it. When conditions are right, Ginkgos can live for hundreds of years, so give this honorable legacy tree a thoughtfully chosen spot in the landscape where it will be admired for generations.
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Not much pruning work required, very low maintenance. Prune as needed in late winter or very early spring while the tree is still dormant. Do focus on keeping a single leader in your tree for as long as the main trunk is within your reach.
Hardiness Zones: 3-8
How Does Shipping Work?
Bower & Branch Trees, the real BIG trees, don’t fit in a box! Our large trees require expert delivery and care, that means our large trees are shipped on Bower & Branch trucks. We are the only ones who know how to ship our big and bigger trees and plants with tender loving care.
We deliver your trees and plants directly to your driveway or curbside! Ask Bower & Branch about planting services and rates – we'd be happy to assist in installation.
*Big trees, Size XL (A) and bigger, will take approximately 2 to 4 weeks days to be delivered. - Sizes large (AA) and smaller (Treelings) will be shipped directly to your home by a local common carrier in a plant-safe box.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
